A Problem Course in Chemistry (Classic Reprint)

A Problem Course in Chemistry (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: David B. Pugh
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780484385251
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 154

Book Description
Excerpt from A Problem Course in Chemistry The object has been not to set an arbitrary standard for other teachers to follow, but to compile such a set of problems as will meet the needs of the individual teacher and the in dividual student. In the interest of variety and thoroughness, more than six hundred problems are furnished, although the authors have found in their own classes that one hundred and fifty of these exercises, related to the laboratory and text-k material, provide a satisfactorily balanced year's work. The fundamental principles essential to an intelligent under standing of the calculations are presented in a clear and simple manner. Emphasis is laid upon the fact that all relationships in chemistry are quantitative, and means are provided for the solution of problems commonly met in general chemistry. It has been deemed advisable to call attention to the typical and characteristic reactions of the chemistry of the home, of the laboratory, and of industry. The data provided in the tables have been collected from standard works of reference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Chemical Problems

Chemical Problems PDF Author: James Clarke Foye
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780331095401
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
Excerpt from Chemical Problems: With Brief Statements of the Principles Involved Tee value of problems as means for securing accuracy in a knowledge of Chemistry and as tests for attainments is recognized by the best educators in this country and Europe. N ot withstanding this there are very few volumes in the English language devoted solely to problems, and these are intended mainly to accompany certain text-books. This work was written because the author keenly felt the need of a convenient volume of problems, while giving instruction to his classes. The inconveniences attending the dictation of problems and the liability to mistake on the part of students can be appreciated only by those who have attempted orally to meet the needs of their classes. The Fundamental Principles of Chemistry

The Fundamental Principles of Chemistry PDF Author: Wilhelm Ostwald

ISBN: 9781330491072
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 366

Book Description
Excerpt from The Fundamental Principles of Chemistry: An Introduction to All Text-Books of Chemistry Two tasks are set for the workers in any science. One of these is to enrich the chosen field by the discovery of new facts and the statement of new experiences. The other task is no less important, but its value is perhaps not so evident at first glance. It is to arrange the facts already known in the best order and to bring out the relations between them as clearly as possible. Whenever progress in the first of these tasks has been rapid the second becomes the more necessary, for it offers the only possible way of attaining mastery over the manifold separate experiences and of bringing the science as a whole into a convenient and serviceable form. The extraordinary development of the experimental side of the science of Chemistry has in some measure thrust into the background the work which has been done on the methodical side. This work has not been wholly lost, but an examination of the various theories which have been advanced in the past few decades, especially in the field of organic chemistry, indicates that most of them were born of the necessity of a day and that they were ephemeral in their influence. A desire for generalization is an important and justified one, and the only reason for the unsatisfactory outcome of all these theories is to be sought, in my opinion, in a fundamental error. Hypothetical assumptions were used in their development. Hypotheses were set up in each case with special reference to the phenomenon to be explained, and I believe that the right way has been obscured in many instances. Indication of the right way is given by the experience of other sciences which are older and simpler than Chemistry and which have therefore already attained the necessary ripeness.
