Twentieth Century French Writers

Twentieth Century French Writers PDF Author: Madame Mary Duclaux

ISBN: 9781331841821

Book Description
Excerpt from Twentieth Century French Writers: Reviews and Reminiscences I meant this book to be an image, a reflection, of the Twentieth Century in France, so far as it is shown in literature during the first fourteen years of its course. But my book is small, the subject is vast: an actual, living movement, a growing generation, is a difficult thing to copy - it will not keep still! And it branches out so wide: there are so many French writers of the younger sort! I am overcome with remorse when I think of the gifted beings whom I have left out! I remember that child whom Saint Augustine saw, trying to gather the sea into his little shell; like him, I see the waters stretching inimitably: I have only brought away a sample. Yet those who taste it may have some faint idea, if not of the breadth and the numerousness of the literary movement in France, at least of its savour and its quality. Given the limits of my little volume, I was compelled to make a choice; and there is always some injustice in a selection. Why should some be taken and others left? Why accept Rostand and reject Bataille? Why give Madame de Noailles and say nothing of Fernand Gregh? Why gather up Boylesve and Andre Gide, neglecting Estaunie, and Sageret, and Paul Adam? If I have Marie Leneru, why not Sacha Guitry? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Modern French Literature The volume is furnished with a likeness of one whose triple renown as poet, orator, and historian, while illustrating the inti mate union in France between letters and politics, has increased his glory as the hero-statesman of the Third French Revolution. The engraving from which this mezzotint is taken was copied, it has been conjectured, from a portrait of Lamartine by his wife. Although the original was painted some years ago, it gives a better idea of his countenance and air than any of the prints which have lately appeared. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of French LiteratureHE lack of a convenient and yet comprehensive history of French literature, beyond the range of skeleton outlines or compendiums of facts, has long been apparent from experience to the present writer. On the other hand, excellent works in French, such as those of Brunetiere or of M. Lanson, are written from a standpoint unfamiliar to the English-speaking reader or student, and take too much for granted. M. Lamson's book is, perhaps, the best one-volume history of French literature in existence, but foreigners often find it difficult to handle. An effort is here made to meet the needs of readers in a work going beyond simple outlines, yet not pretending to specialisation in every period a thing which is impossible for one man now that we are, of necessity, either mediaevalists or moderns. The book might, perhaps, more fittingly be called a literary history of France, inasmuch as the relations have been emphasised of literature and social environment, and the Latin writings of the Middle Ages have been included. Accuracy has, of course, been sought as far as possible in view of the wide range of the subject. Yet the author does not aspire, as some do, to the merit of an absolutely independent judgment on every topic. On the contrary, he considers it the duty of the composer of a synthesis to rely, to a reasonable degree, on those who have spent months or years on individual writers whom he must perforce treat summarily. He sets himself down unhesitatingly as a pickpurse of another's wit the authorities from whom he has readily drawn will, it is hoped, be found accounted for in the bibliography.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of French Literature Instead of closing the survey, as do some books, with the decline of Romanticism, or as others, with that of Naturalism, the history of French literature has been traced down to the present day. It may be objected that living writers are too near to us to allow of an impartial and complete judgment on their works. No attempt has been made to pass any such judgment, but such an account of the French literature of today is given as may at least serve to indicate its general tendencies. Some Modern French Writers a Study in Bergsonism (Classic Reprint)

Some Modern French Writers a Study in Bergsonism (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: G Turquet-Milnes
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330703625

Book Description
Excerpt from Some Modern French Writers a Study in Bergsonism Those critics who study the destiny of philosophical ideas for the ironical pleasure of seeing them work in exactly the opposite direction from that which their founders intended have not failed to remark that the two great movements of French thought since the 16th century - Calvinism and Cartesianism - developed states of mind utterly different from those Calvin and Descartes wished to create. Descartes would have been horrified to hear himself called the father of the French Revolution, and Calvin equally so at being called one of the founders of free thought. It would seem, then, that in addition to the impetus given by a powerful writer, there is another and more powerful movement to which the first must conform, if it is to succeed. The fact is, that when we cut up society into slices, two important groups are soon discovered - the political and the literary, and the former always ends by absorbing the latter, except in the very rare case of a genius who is both legislative and poetical: Mahomet, for example. The social aspirations of a people always manage to get themselves adopted in the end, and that for obvious reasons. Vox populi, Vox Dei. The only doctrines which have a chance of surviving are those which in the course of time blend not only with the tendencies of the moment, but with the general spirit of a nation, nay, of mankind.
