The Object of this research has been to study methods of building up the five-membered D ring of the steroid nucleus upon certain tricyclicketoethers (I) previously prepared in this laboratory (1,2). Transformations of this type have been reported by several groups of chemists, and we have attempted to valuate these methods and possibly modify one of them to serve our purpose. Since the tricyclicketoethers are difficult to prepare, we have used cyclohexanone as a model compound.

The accelerated accumulation of experimental material is continuing, mainly in the form of the improvement of already-existing synthesis schemes.
