The Rumen and Its Microbes

The Rumen and Its Microbes PDF Author: Robert E. Hungate
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483263622
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 544

Book Description
The Rumen and Its Microbes is a contribution to the ecology of this important microbial habitat. Relatively few microbial habitats have been subjected to a thorough quantitative ecological analysis. The rumen fermentation is peculiarly suitable because of its relatively constant and continuous nature and because of the very rapid rates of conversion of organic matter. Although analysis of the ruminant-microbe symbiosis is still far from complete, knowledge is sufficient for formulation of principles and for identification and measurement of important parameters. The first eight chapters of the book include a description of the rumen and its microbes, their activities, and the extent of these activities. This basic biology provides a framework in which applications to agriculture can be evaluated. These applications are discussed in the last four chapters: host metabolism, variation in the rumen, possible practical applications, and abnormalities in rumen function.

Livestock Production and Climate Change

Livestock Production and Climate Change PDF Author: Pradeep K Malik
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 1780644329
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 409

Book Description
In a changing climate, livestock production is expected to exhibit dual roles of mitigation and adaptation in order to meet the challenge of food security. This book approaches the issues of livestock production and climate change through three sections: I. Livestock production, II. Climate change and, III. Enteric methane amelioration. Section I addresses issues of feed quality and availability, abiotic stress (heat and nutritional) and strategies for alleviation, livestock generated nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, and approaches for harnessing the complex gut microbial diversity. Section II discusses the effects of climate change on livestock diversity, farm animal reproduction, impact of meat production on climate change, and emphasising the role of indigenous livestock in climatic change to sustain production. Section III deals with the most recent approaches to amelioration of livestock methane such as breeding for low methane emissions, reductive acetogenesis, immunization/vaccine-based concepts and archaea phage therapy.

The Rumen Microbial Ecosystem

The Rumen Microbial Ecosystem PDF Author: P.N. Hobson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400914539
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 741

Book Description
The Preface to the first edition of this book explained the reasons for the publication of a comprehensive text on the rumen and rumen microbes in 1988. The microbes of the ruminant's forestomach and those in related organs in other animals and birds provide the means by which herbivorous animals can digest and obtain nutriment from vegetation. In turn, humans have relied, and still do rely, on herbivores for much of their food, clothing and motive power. Herbivores also form the food of carnivorous animals and birds in the wild. The importance of the rumen microorganisms is thus apparent. But, while a knowledge of rumen organisms is not strictly neces sary for the normal, practical feeding of farm animals, in recent years there has been much more emphasis on increasing the productivity of domesti cated animals and in rearing farm animals on unusual feedstuffs. Here, a knowledge of the reactions of the rumen flora, and the limits to these reactions, can be invaluable. In addition, anaerobic rumen-type microor ganisms are found in the intestines of omnivores, including humans, and can be implicated in diseases of humans and animals. They are also found in soils and natural waters, where they playa part in causing pollution and also in reducing it, while the same organisms confined in artificial systems are essential for the purification of sewage and other polluting and toxic wastes.

Laboratory Manual for Classification and Morphology of Rumen Ciliate Protozoa

Laboratory Manual for Classification and Morphology of Rumen Ciliate Protozoa PDF Author: B.A. Dehority
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 135109081X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 177

Book Description
The only rumen protozoa lab guide featuring line drawings created by a leading scientist in the field Laboratory Manual for Classification and Morphology of Rumen Ciliate Protozoa is a unique lab guide for learning how to count and identify rumen protozoa. In this guide, Professor Dehority has created line drawings of rumen protozoa that emphasize morphological features and size measurements. The book also provides keys for identifying genera and species, and it contains classifications and descriptions of the different orders and families of rumen ciliate protozoa. Procedures for counting rumen protozoa and identifying individual species are included as well. Laboratory Manual for Classification and Morphology of Rumen Ciliate Protozoa will be an excellent identification guide for protozoologists, microbiologists, dairy scientists, and any researcher or student working with rumen protozoa.

Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle

Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309069971
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 406

Book Description
This widely used reference has been updated and revamped to reflect the changing face of the dairy industry. New features allow users to pinpoint nutrient requirements more accurately for individual animals. The committee also provides guidance on how nutrient analysis of feed ingredients, insights into nutrient utilization by the animal, and formulation of diets to reduce environmental impacts can be applied to productive management decisions. The book includes a user-friendly computer program on a compact disk, accompanied by extensive context-sensitive "Help" options, to simulate the dynamic state of animals. The committee addresses important issues unique to dairy science-the dry or transition cow, udder edema, milk fever, low-fat milk, calf dehydration, and more. The also volume covers dry matter intake, including how to predict feed intake. It addresses the management of lactating dairy cows, utilization of fat in calf and lactation diets, and calf and heifer replacement nutrition. In addition, the many useful tables include updated nutrient composition for commonly used feedstuffs.
