Book Description
Excerpt from Some Considerations Preliminary to the Study of Medicine: Being the Introductory Address to the 124th Annual Session of the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania, Delivered October 1st, 1889 IT has not been unusual, of late, to disparage the introductory address, and there are those who would altogether omit it from the curriculum, as unprofitable, and as occupying time which were better spent in the regular exercises of the course. But when it is remembered that there are collected, on an occasion like this, nearly 500 young men, at least one-fourth of whom are present for the first time in official relation with their instructors in the profession of their choice, and most of whom are strangers in a great city, it is diļ¬icult to conceive why an hour may not be profitably employed in the consideration of matters a knowledge of which may be useful and even important to them. I feel, therefore, that it is not the nature of the office so much as the shortcoming of the officer, not the introductory lecture, but the introductory lecturer, who is responsible if the hour prove un profitable. It will be my fault, therefore, if to-day this should be the case. In turn, I can but promise the effort which the choice of my colleagues and my wish to serve }ou demand of me, and it has seemed to me that I could perhaps best do so by bringing to your notice some considerations which I believe are appropriate in this preliminary stage of your studies. If, in so doing, I appear at times to address my remarks to those who are here {or the first time, I must ask the indulgence of the more ad vanced students who are not strangers among us. The Science of Effective Mentorship in STEMM
Author: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309497299
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 307
Book Description
Mentorship is a catalyst capable of unleashing one's potential for discovery, curiosity, and participation in STEMM and subsequently improving the training environment in which that STEMM potential is fostered. Mentoring relationships provide developmental spaces in which students' STEMM skills are honed and pathways into STEMM fields can be discovered. Because mentorship can be so influential in shaping the future STEMM workforce, its occurrence should not be left to chance or idiosyncratic implementation. There is a gap between what we know about effective mentoring and how it is practiced in higher education. The Science of Effective Mentorship in STEMM studies mentoring programs and practices at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It explores the importance of mentorship, the science of mentoring relationships, mentorship of underrepresented students in STEMM, mentorship structures and behaviors, and institutional cultures that support mentorship. This report and its complementary interactive guide present insights on effective programs and practices that can be adopted and adapted by institutions, departments, and individual faculty members.
