The use of coal as a fuel source has been decreasing rapidly due to economic and environmental concerns. As a result, it is becoming increasingly important to find alternative uses for this abundant resource for states and countries that have economies that rely heavily on coal. Previous work from our group has shown that treatment of coal with various solvents can convert Wyoming coal into carbon fiber mats for non-thermal applications, such as electrodes for energy storage devices (supercapacitors or batteries). However, there still lacks systematic study on the fate of different streams for one of the most cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable solvents, formed from choline and l-arginate in water, referred to as [Ch][ARG]. In this work, Wyoming coal from the Powder River Basin was treated with [Ch][ARG], with the coal fragments insoluble in the solvent being referred to as char. The [Ch][ARG] char was carefully characterized and used as precursors for electrospinning. FT-IR and TGA-MS results of the char showed the presence of the [Ch][ARG] used for treatment despite thorough washing and of oxygen containing functional groups. N2 and CO2 physisorption results showed the porosity of the char is located mainly in the sub nanometer region (microporous), with a very low percentage of mesopores (> 2nm). The coal derived carbon fiber mats (CFM) were characterized using FT-IR and scanning electron microscope (SEM) and tested for their potential applications in semipermeable membranes.
