Appropriation, or the White Sun of Crimea

Appropriation, or the White Sun of Crimea PDF Author: Natasha Vlashchenko
Publisher: Huangxiang Culture Studio
ISBN:
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
I began writing this book in the summer of 2015, when the fate of Ukraine's nationhood hung by a thread. The tanking economy, drawn-out war, misguided political leadership, inexperienced nascent patriotic elite - everything about the situation was practically in zugzwang. On these July days, I practically forced myself to go into town on business, tearing through the 40-degree heat. At some point, after coming out of another meeting, I understood: we cannot go a single step further unless we genuinely rethink what's happened to us - starting with the Maidan Uprising. Ukraine's recent history, paid for in blood, must at least be spoken aloud. I knew that several accounts more or less describing the developments of the Maidan Uprising came out around that time, as well as Taras Berezovets's book, Annexation: Island of Crimea. As harsh as it sounds, I don't really trust "court chroniclers"; books like that should be written by independent historians or journalists. We became used to writing about dramatic events in recent history from the perspective of a participant on either side of the barricade. Me? I'm only a journalist. My aim is to find and make sense of information, which is what I attempted to do in this book.

Demon in White

Demon in White PDF Author: Christopher Ruocchio
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 0756413060
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 786

Book Description
The third novel of the galaxy-spanning Sun Eater series merges the best of space opera and epic fantasy, as Hadrian Marlowe continues down a path that can only end in fire. Hadrian has been serving the Empire in military engagements against the Cielcin, the vicious alien civilization bent on humanity's destruction. After Hadrian and his Red Company achieve a great victory, a cult-like fervor builds around him. However, pressures within the Imperial government scared of his rise to prominence result in an assassination attempt, luckily thwarted. With the Empire too dangerous to stay, Hadrian and his crew leave for a massive library on a distant world. There, he finds the next key to unlocking the secrets of the Quiet: a set of coordinates for their origin planet, unnamed and now lifeless. Hadrian's true purpose in serving in the military was to aid his search of a rumored connection between the first Emperor and the Quiet, the ancient, seemingly long-dead race linked to so many of Hadrian's extraordinary experiences. Will this mysterious lost planet have the answers?

The Reluctant Combatant

The Reluctant Combatant PDF Author: Kitamura Minoru
Publisher: University Press of America
ISBN: 0761863257
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 142

Book Description
The Reluctant Combatant offers proof that Japanese political leaders were reluctant to engage China in a full-scale conflict during the Second Sino-Japanese War. This book identifies several key aspects of the political context surrounding the Second Sino-Japanese War, including the extreme fragility of the national united front against Japan, the view of Soviet Russia as Japan’s principal potential adversary, and the potential threat to Japanese national defense a protracted war with China would pose. This book reveals that the Communists, the National Government, local gentry, peasants, and bandits occasionally collaborated with the enemy—Japanese troops—to expand their spheres of influence.

Historical Dictionary of Russian and Soviet Cinema

Historical Dictionary of Russian and Soviet Cinema PDF Author: Peter Rollberg
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1442268425
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 891

Book Description
Russian and Soviet cinema occupies a unique place in the history of world cinema. Legendary filmmakers such as Sergei Eisenstein, Vsevolod Pudovkin, Dziga Vertov, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Sergei Paradjanov have created oeuvres that are being screened and studied all over the world. The Soviet film industry was different from others because its main criterion of success was not profit, but the ideological and aesthetic effect on the viewer. Another important feature is Soviet cinema’s multinational (Eurasian) character: while Russian cinema was the largest, other national cinemas such as Georgian, Kazakh, and Ukrainian played a decisive role for Soviet cinema as a whole. The Historical Dictionary of Russian and Soviet Cinema provides a rich tapestry of factual information, together with detailed critical assessments of individual artistic accomplishments. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of Russian and Soviet Cinema contains a chronology, an introduction, and a bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on directors, performers, cinematographers, composers, designers, producers, and studios. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Russian and Soviet Cinema.
