Book Description
Excerpt from Soldiers of the Queen "They shouldered arms, and looked straight before them, and wore a splendid uniform, red and blue." - The Brave Tin Soldier. The battle was nearly over. Gallant tin soldiers of the line lay where they had fallen; nearly the whole of a shilling box of light cavalry had paid the penalty of rashly exposing themselves in a compact body to the enemy's fire; while a rickety little field-gun, with bright red wheels, lay overturned on two infantry men, who, even in death, held their muskets firmly to their shoulders, like the grim old "die-hards" that they were. Book Description
Excerpt from The Queen's Shilling, Vol. 1: A Soldier's Story On the east coast, somewhere between Norfolk and Northumberland, there stands an ancient but decayed fishing-village, named Scaggleton. The place had been of importance once, probably in the time of the Danes, when Olaf the Burly built the stronghold whose ruins stand to this day on St. Bungo's Hill, and the rovers piled up a cairn of stones on Scatheness Spit to guide themselves in and out. But since that time Scaggleton had gone down in the world, and the fault lay with the German Ocean. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
The brigade of guards, a dozen red-coated veterans of solid lead, who had taken up a strong position in the cover of a cardboard box, still held their ground with a desperate valour only equalled by the dogged pluck of a similar body of the enemy, who had occupied the inkstand with the evident intention of remaining there until the last cartridge had been expended. Another volley swept the intervening stretch of tablecloth, and the deadly missiles glanced against the glass bottles and rattled among the pencils and penholders. Two men fell without a cry, and lay motionless with their heads resting on the pen-wiper.

Excerpt from Outlaw Trails: A Yankee Hobo Soldier of the Queen This is not an apology or any attempt at excuse for having chosen a life of vagabondage, which for years kept me wandering about the world, often resorting to things that were far Without the pale of the law, which society condemns, and which often threw me into the clutches of the law, and landed me in jail. I merely set forth the following outline of my early childhood as a reason for what I did. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of the British Army I have endeavoured in the space at my disposal to Show how the British Army has grown up. I have tried merely to tell a story, and therefore omitted much that might have been said regarding the noble work the Queen's Army h'as done. As regards the opinions advanced, I have always, as far as possible, given the reasons for my views and the authorities which induced me to form them. I have adhered to the principle of using the old regi mental numbers, for the sake of continuity; though, after the date when these were altered, I have, in most cases, added their present territorial titles. Book Description
Excerpt from Sixty Years of a Soldier's Life My grandfather bought the freehold of Nos. 14 and 15 Queen's Square, now Queen Anne's Gate, two beautiful but highly uncomfortably arranged Queen Anne houses, in the beginning of last century for 5000. In 1867 his executors sold them to a northern plutocrat mp. For a ridiculously low price. They were not con sidered good enough for his residence, and he had them demolished, and in their place erected two most unsightly and lofty red-brick houses, which destroyed the sym metry of the surroundings, only to be matched by the disfigurement worked by the hideosity known as Queen Anne's Mansions. These two houses have now dis appeared, and in their place have been erected the sub stantial and stately offices of the Petrol octopus, which, not content with making corners in his own country, has extended his operations into the heart of London.
