Book Description
Walter Billingsley's entire life changed on a dark, violent night in the spring of 1776. At the tender age of fifteen, he witnessed and experienced unspeakable acts of terror against his family, perpetrated by militants loyal to the British Crown. The horrors of that unforgettable night launched this innocent Colonial lad on a determined course toward service in the rebellion known as the American Revolution. Five horrendous years of suffering, privation, violence, loss, and war molded the North Carolina lad into a battle-hardened, bitter, and angry young man. He became disheartened, despondent, and vengeful. Walter grew to hate the world around him, so he departed all that was familiar to him and set out in search of a new life in the raw, unspoiled mountains of the western frontier. Would Walter ever feel peace and forgiveness in his heart again? Or, would he carry his painful scars of violence and rage to his grave? Soldiers and Martyrs is the story of an unlikely Patriot who left his farm and home in North Carolina to become a man, fight for his loved ones, and help earn freedom for the United States of America.

The Book Of Martyrs

The Book Of Martyrs PDF Author: John Foxe
Publisher: Jazzybee Verlag
ISBN: 3849678164
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 451

Book Description
“Acts and Monuments”, commonly known as The Book of Martyrs, is a celebrated work of church history and martyrology. It was published as an affirmation of the Protestant Reformation in England during a period of religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants. Foxe's account of church history asserted a historical justification that was intended to establish the Church of England as a continuation of the true Christian church rather than as a modern innovation, and it contributed significantly to a nationalistic repudiation of the Roman Catholic Church.

Book Description
This work is strictly what its title page imports, a compilation. Fox's "Book of Martyrs" has been made the basis of this volume. Liberty, however, has been taken to abridge wherever it was thought necessary;—to alter the antiquated form of the phraseology; to introduce additional information; and to correct any inaccuracy respecting matters of fact, which had escaped the author of the original work, or which has been found erroneous by the investigation of modern research. The object of this work, is to give a brief history of persecution since the first introduction of christianity, till the present time. In doing this, we have commenced with the martyrdom of Stephen, and following the course of events, have brought the History of persecution down to the year 1830. In all ages, we find that a disposition to persecute for opinion's sake, has been manifested by wicked men, whatever may have been their opinions or sentiments on religious subjects. The intolerant jew, and the bigoted pagan, have exhibited no more of a persecuting spirit, than the nominal professor of christianity, and the infidel and the avowed atheist. Indeed, it seems to be an "inherent vice," in unsanctified nature to endeavour by the pressure of physical force, to restrain obnoxious sentiments, and to propagate favourite opinions. It is only when the heart has been renewed and sanctified by divine grace, that men have rightly understood and practised the true principles of toleration. We do not say that none but real christians have adopted correct views respecting civil and religious liberty;—but we affirm that these views owe their origin entirely to christianity and its genuine disciples.
