Observing the Sun with CoronadoTM Telescopes
Author: Philip Pugh
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387681264
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 338
Book Description
For this ground-breaking book, Philip Pugh has assembled a team of contributors who show just how much solar observation work can be accomplished with Coronado telescopes, and explain how to get the best from these marvelous instruments. The book shows that Solar prominences, filaments, flares, sunspots, plage and active regions are all visible and can be imaged to produce spectacular solar photographs.

Fundamentals of Solar Astronomy
Author: A. Bhatnagar
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812567879
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 468
Book Description
There are several textbooks available on solar astronomy which deal with advanced astrophysical aspects of solar physics, and books which provide very elementary knowledge about the Sun. This book will help to bridge the gap. It aims to stimulate interest in solar astronomy, presenting at one place the basic methods and techniques used in the field, together with the latest findings and the excitement in solar physics. As solar astronomy is becoming very popular among amateur astronomers and laymen, the book provides the practical knowledge to build simple solar telescopes and other equipment for making solar observations. Amateur astronomers have made important contributions to solar astronomy, and this book will help to guide them in their endeavours. The book can also serve as a text for undergraduate and graduate students starting out on solar physics. Using it, graduate students can easily embark on specific topics of research in solar astronomy.

The Construction and Testing of a Pair of Matched Solar Telescopes
Author: Fred Ward
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Solar flares
Languages : en
Pages : 36
Book Description
A pair of carefully matched telecopes and videometers were constructed and tested to determine their suitability to obtain routine standardized measurements of solar flares. Useful data were obtained from both telescopes during four flares between March 1971 and March 1972. Errors in the current international patrol are typically a factor of two. The mismatch of the areas of the four flares measured by these telescope systems was only 10%, indicating the extent of the possible improvement to be obtained by careful matching and intercalibration of patrol instruments. (Author).

Initial Results from the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS)
Author: Jongchul Chae
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319121235
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 140
Book Description
Describes the instruments and initial results of the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) at the Big Bear Solar Observatory. This collection of papers describes the instrument and initial results obtained from the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS), one of the post-focus instruments of the 1.6 meter New Solar Telescope at the Big Bear Solar Observatory. The FISS primarily aims at investigating structures and dynamics of chromospheric features. This instrument is a dual-band Echelle spectrograph optimized for the simultaneous recording of the H I 656.3 nm band and the Ca II 854.2 nm band. The imaging is done with the fast raster scan realized by the linear motion of a two-mirror scanner, and its quality is determined by the performance of the adaptive optics of the telescope. These papers illustrate the capability of the early FISS observations in the study of chromospheric features. Since the imaging quality has been improved a lot with the advance of the adaptive optics, one can obtain much better data with the current FISS observations. This volume is aimed at graduate students and researchers working in the field of solar physics and space sciences. Originally published in Solar Physics, Vol. 288, Issue 1, 2013, and Vol. 289, Issue 11, 2014.
