Effect of Pile Driving on Adjacent Piles in Clay
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 12
Book Description
When a pile is driven into clay, horizontal and vertical movements are developed in the soil surrounding the pile. These movements will tend to develop axial forces and bending moments in adjacent piles that have already been installed. Possible consequences for these piles are (i) structural damage or cracking (of concrete piles) arising from the induced bending moments, (ii) tensile failure of the piles due to the induced axial forces, and (iii) lifting-off of the pile tip from the bearing stratum due to the axial induced movements. This paper describes the results of a theoretical analysis of the bending moments and axial forces developed in a pile due to driving of an adjacent pile in clay. The analysis uses approximate distributions of horizontal and vertical soil movements caused by pile driving, developed from a strain-path' analysis, together with inferences from model pile test data. An examination is made of various factors that may influence the induced bending moments and forces, including pile spacing, depth of penetration of the adjacent pile, and number of piles driven. For a number of published case histories comparisons are made between theoretical and measured axial and lateral pile movements. In general, satisfactory agreement are made between theoretical and measured axial and lateral pile movements.

Transparent Soil Modelling Technique and Its Application
Author: Honghua Zhao
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 981196825X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 365
Book Description
This book systematically introduces the advancement of transparent soil modelling technique and its application. The transparent soil modelling technique provides an essential tool for visualizing soil-structure interaction and other geotechnical problems such as grouting, soil plugging. The geotechnical properties of the newest transparent soils were reported on model sand, clay and rock. In addition, more advanced image processing methods were summarized. In this book, numerous applications of transparent soil modelling techniques for different geotechnical problems were presented, and the results obtained are supplemented by numerical calculation and theoretical analysis.

Landslides and Their Stabilization
Author: Ch. Veder
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3709176042
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 257
Book Description
This book was written with the objective of providing geotechnical engineers with a practical guideline on how to cope with landslides as well as of acquaint ing them with the present state of physical fundamentals and scientific expla nations for the phenomenon of landslides. The book is based on my personal experiences, gathered over decades of work as geotechnical engineer on construction sites in Austria and many other parts of the world, which I also use in my lectures at the Technical University of Graz, Austria. The method of stabilizing lands lides by short-circuit conductors has been developed by myself and has been patented in Germany and Italy. A number of publications already exists (see References) on this method, and of course I also deal in this book with its theoretical and practical aspects. Here I want to thank my assistants, Messrs. J. Dalmatiner, K. Eigenberger, E. Garber, H. Kienberger, R. Pötscher, and W. Prodinger, for working with me on various projects and for assisting me in the drafting of some chapters of this book, Mr. A. Trippl for preparing the illustrations, and my wife for many a Sunday worked through with me.

Avoiding Damage Caused by Soil-structure Interaction
Author: Richard Kastner
Publisher: Thomas Telford
ISBN: 9780727731241
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 108
Book Description
Increasing development in the urban environment and supporting infrastructure systems has necessitated a greater use of underground space and sites that were hitherto judges to be not economically viable (e.g. because of difficult ground conditions). This presents many challenges in terms of planning, design and construction as well as the protection of existing buildings. Understanding the complex nature of soil-structure interaction and the resulting ground movements is an integral part of assessing developments involving new construction, for example tunnels and deep excavations.
