Soil Erosion and Sediment Flux in Northern Jordan

Soil Erosion and Sediment Flux in Northern Jordan PDF Author: Sabine Kraushaar
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319318888
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 198

Book Description
This book combines new quantitative erosion measurement methods with a geochemical fingerprint and a model-based approach to measure erosion and sediment flux in the Wadi Al-Arab, a Mediterranean to semi-arid catchment in northwest Jordan. The outcomes reveal the local importance of soil erosion and sediment yield in connection with sedimentation and pollution of surface water bodies, propose managed aquifer recharge strategies that focus on in-channel constructions, and can be used to support local soil management strategies. In Jordan, one of the most water scarcity-affected countries in the world, erosion and sedimentation negatively impact integrative water resource management projects, such as water reservoirs and groundwater recharge basins. This book combines a multiple-response approach with new qualitative methods, such as olive mound measurements and OSL dating of Roman cistern sediments, to obtain long-term average erosion rates in the Mediterranean to semi-arid Wadi Al-Arab catchment in northwest Jordan. The implementation and enhancement of a geochemical sediment fingerprint of the reservoir sediments helped to provide new insights on sediment connectivity. Lastly, the outcomes were compiled and tested in the SedNet model, which provides a more holistic view of the results at the catchment scale and can effectively complement local management strategies.

Drylands

Drylands PDF Author: Peter Beaumont
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317858190
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 513

Book Description
Drylands, which cover over half the world's area, have witnessed rapid development, exploitation and change with the discovery of mineral reserves, urbanization and population growth. Environmental management is critical to the conservation and sustainable use of resources. This comprehensive text offers a systematic study of the physical nature of drylands and the history of human response to and uses of these harsh landscapes. Detailed case studies, including urban as well as pastoral drylands from California to Soviet Central Asia, the Middle East, the Sahara and Australia, contrast different management approaches and problems.

Applied Morphometry and Watershed Management Using RS, GIS and Multivariate Statistics(Case Studies)

Applied Morphometry and Watershed Management Using RS, GIS and Multivariate Statistics(Case Studies) PDF Author: Yahya Farhan
Publisher: Scientific Research Publishing, Inc. USA
ISBN: 1618964100
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 488

Book Description
“Applied Morphometry and Watershed Management” book is designed to introduce the recent developments related to applied morphometric studies of drainage basins. Applications of drainage basin morphometric analysis cover several topics of research such as: 1) Prioritization of sub-watersheds for soil and water conservation; 2) Surface water harvesting; 3) Assessment of groundwater potential and predicting of groundwater movement; 4) Geo-hazard assessment (i.e., soil erosion and sediment yield modeling, landslide susceptibility mapping; flashflood hazard and flood management; 5) The impact of Quaternary tectonics on structure and drainage network distortions.

Millennial Landscape Change in Jordan

Millennial Landscape Change in Jordan PDF Author: Carlos E. Cordova
Publisher: University of Arizona Press
ISBN: 0816551030
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 276

Book Description
Stands of relict vegetation, soil horizons, and sedimentary deposits along with archaeological evidence suggest that during certain time spans within the past twenty millennia, Jordan was endowed with moister and more vegetated landscapes than the ones we see today. In this detailed volume, Carlos E. Cordova synthesizes diverse information on multiple topics to provide a comprehensive view of the changes in the Jordanian landscape and the many ways it has been affected by human habitation and the forces of nature. Cordova focuses on geoarchaeological and cultural ecological aspects of research, presenting data from physical, chemical, and biological sources. He examines the changing influence of climate, vegetation, and hunting opportunities on cultural exploitation tactics, as well as the effects of the growing population and agriculture on the environment. Cordova argues that an interdisciplinary approach to studying the area is crucial to achieving a true understanding of Jordan’s changing landscape. Chapter topics include approaches to the study of ancient Jordanian landscapes in the Near Eastern context; the physical scene; endowed landscapes of the woodlands; the encroaching drylands; the current and future state of the paleoecological and geoarchaeological record; patterns of millennial landscape change; and the process of interpreting millennial landscape change. The text is abundantly illustrated with photos, line illustrations, tables, and maps, providing a valuable assessment of archaeological developments over the prehistory and history of what today is the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. This volume will be especially welcomed by scholars interested in the archaeology, history, and geography of Jordan, the Levant, and the Near East and by field-school students working on archaeological projects in Jordan.
