Electrochemically Assisted Remediation of Contaminated Soils

Electrochemically Assisted Remediation of Contaminated Soils PDF Author: M. A. Rodrigo
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030681408
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 569

Book Description
This book provides an overview of the current development status of remediation technologies involving electrochemical processes, which are used to clean up soils that are contaminated with different types of contaminants (organics, inorganics, metalloids and radioactive). Written by internationally recognized experts, it comprises 21 chapters describing the characteristics and theoretical foundations of various electrochemical applications of soil remediation. The book’s opening section discusses the fundamental properties and characteristics of the soil, which are essential to understand the processes that can most effectively remove organic and inorganic compounds. This part also focuses on the primary processes that contribute to the application of electrochemically assisted remediation, hydrodynamic aspects and kinetics of contaminants in the soil. It also reviews the techniques that have been developed for the treatment of contaminated soils using electrochemistry, and discusses different strategies used to enhance performance, the type of electrode and electrolyte, and the most important operating conditions. In turn, the book’s second part deals with practical applications of technologies related to the separation of pollutants from soil. Special emphasis is given to the characteristics of these technologies regarding transport of the contaminants and soil toxicity after treatment. The third part is dedicated to new technologies, including electrokinetic remediation and hybrid approaches, for the treatment of emerging contaminants by ex-situ and in-situ production of strong oxidant species used for soil remediation. It also discusses pre-pilot scale for soil treatment and the use of solar photovoltaic panels as an energy source for powering electrochemical systems, which can reduce both the investment and maintenance costs of electrochemically assisted processes.

Environmental Soil Remediation and Rehabilitation

Environmental Soil Remediation and Rehabilitation PDF Author: Eric D. van Hullebusch
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030403483
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 438

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive overview of innovative remediation techniques and strategies for soils contaminated by heavy metals or organic compounds (e.g. petroleum hydrocarbons, NAPLs and chlorinated organic compounds). It discusses various novel chemical remediation approaches (in-situ and ex-situ) used alone and in combination with physical and/or thermal treatment. Further, it addresses the recovery of NAPLs, reuse of leaching solutions, and in-situ chemical reduction and oxidation, and explores the chemical enhancement of physical NAPLs recovery from both practical and theoretical perspectives. Also presenting the state-of-the-art in waste-assisted bioremediation to improve soil quality and the remediation of petroleum hydrocarbons, the book is a valuable resource for students, researchers and R&D professionals in industry engaged in the treatment of contaminated soils.

In Situ Bioreclamation

In Situ Bioreclamation PDF Author: Robert E. Hinchee
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483145034
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 642

Book Description
In Situ Bioreclamation: Applications and Investigations for Hydrocarbon and Contaminated Site Remediation is a collection of selected papers submitted by participants to the international symposium ""In Situ and On-Site Bioreclamation"", held in San Diego, California in March 1991. The book consists of articles, which represent a substantial technical contribution, and technical notes, and brief technology descriptions or reports of preliminary or less substantial studies that proposes and exposes various solutions for the biological treatment of contaminated soil, water, and gas. This volume is one of two that represent the most complete and up-to-date set of papers at the time. The book covers the most comprehensive collection of treatises that presents practices in the reversal of damages to the environment. Solutions vary from proven commercially available technologies for some applications, such as reactor treatment of petroleum hydrocarbons in aqueous steams, to fundamental research in others, such as genetic engineering to develop strains of biodegradable xenobiotics. Environmentalists, scientists, students of natural sciences, civil engineers, and those concerned with the preservation and restoration of nature will find this book invaluable.

Analysis of Selected Enhancements for Soil Vapor Extraction

Analysis of Selected Enhancements for Soil Vapor Extraction PDF Author:
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1428903607
Category : Soil pollution
Languages : en
Pages : 246

Book Description
This report provides an engineering analysis of, and status report on, selected enhancements for soil vapor extraction (SVE) treatment technologies. The report is intended to assist project managers considering an SVE treatment system by providing them with an up-to-date status of enhancement technologies; an evaluation of each technology's applicability to various site conditions; a presentation of cost and performance information; a list of vendors specializing in the technologies; a discussion of relative strengths and limitations of the technologies; recommendations to keep in mind when considering the enhancements; and a compilation of references. The performance of an SVE system depends on properties of both the contaminants and the soil. SVE is generally applicable to compounds with a vapor pressure of greater than 1 millimeter of mercury at 20EC and a Henry s Law constant of greater than 100 atmospheres per mole fraction. SVE is most effective at sites with relatively permeable contaminated soil and with saturated hydraulic conductivities of greater than 1 x 10 or 1 x 10 centimeter per second (cm/s). SVE by itself does not effectively remove contaminants -3 -2 in saturated soil. However, SVE can be used as an integral part of some treatment schemes that treat both groundwater and the overlying vadose zone. Enhancement technologies should be considered when contaminant or soil characteristics limit the effectiveness of SVE or when contaminants are present in saturated soil. The five enhancement technologies covered in this report are as follows and are described in the following subsections: * Air Sparging * Dual-phase Extraction * Directional Drilling * Pneumatic and Hydraulic Fracturing * Thermal Enhancement.
