Este libro tiene como finalidad presentar una nueva perspectiva socioló gica, fruto de transformaciones estructurales que hacen cada vez más necesaria una particular inteligibilidad del mundo a escala del individuo. Una vez presentadas de manera crítica dos grandes corrientes contemporáneas de la sociología del individuo (el disposicionalismo y la tesis de la individualización), se aboga por otra vía teórica: una sociología de los desafíos sociales que plantea una nueva articulación entre el individuo y la estructura social. Una sociología que parte de las experiencias individuales para dar cuenta de los retos que la sociedad produce estructuralmente y que los individuos deben enfrentar. La argumentación se despliega a lo largo del libro con ilustraciones provenientes de investigaciones empíricas sobre diversas cuestiones (reparto de tareas domésticas, estudiantes de clases populares, depresión, clases sociales, la vida en barrios periféricos, vulnerabilidad, la autoridad en las aulas) y en diálogo crítico con otras corrientes sociológicas (individualismo metodológico, teoría de la práctica, microsociologías, teoría del actor red, sociología clínica). La defensa de esta sociología de los desafíos sociales, que se presenta en conversación con la sociología española actual, concluye invitando a renovar la intervención social a través de nuevos dispositivos cuyos destinatarios son los individuos.
