Book Description
This study is presented in two phases. The first involves a producer survey used to estimate industry-specific economic multipliers for ongoing hog operations in different types of rural communities in Alberta. Benefits are estimated based on the number of employees, the number of additional jobs that this spending supports, and the income generated by the spending. The second phase relies on the application of multipliers to five specific expansion and/or investment projects to quantify the magnitude of economic benefits; interviews with immediate & surrounding neighbours of case study hog operations to help clarify the nature & specific source of any concerns; and community focus group meetings within the case study communities to further supplement the social & environmental management information materials. Based on the study findings, implications for the hog business manager interested in expansion are discussed.
