Socialism: The Failed Idea That Never Dies
Author: Kristian Niemietz
Publisher: London Publishing Partnership
ISBN: 0255367716
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 401
Book Description
Socialism is strangely impervious to refutation by real-world experience. Over the past hundred years, there have been more than two dozen attempts to build a socialist society, from the Soviet Union to Maoist China to Venezuela. All of them have ended in varying degrees of failure. But, according to socialism’s adherents, that is only because none of these experiments were “real socialism”. This book documents the history of this, by now, standard response. It shows how the claim of fake socialism is only ever made after the event. As long as a socialist project is in its prime, almost nobody claims that it is not real socialism. On the contrary, virtually every socialist project in history has gone through a honeymoon period, during which it was enthusiastically praised by prominent Western intellectuals. It was only when their failures became too obvious to deny that they got retroactively reclassified as “not real socialism”.

A Critical Examination of Socialism (Classic Reprint)
Author: W. H. Mallock
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780484594974
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 316
Book Description
Excerpt from A Critical Examination of Socialism The subject is one, however, which, if it were to be treated exhaustively, would demand a series of volumes rather than a series Of chapters, and the arguments here set forth are written in a species Of short-hand, and at almost every turn are susceptible Of indefinite amplification. But for practical pur poses a short book which is suggestive is likely to be more use than a long one, whose argument, while more complete, might be less easily grasped and less easily available for controversial and educative purposes. What I contemplate doing at some future time is to reproduce the main argument Of this volume in a more purely constructive and less controversial form, and, having thus sketched its various parts in outline, as an introduction, to elaborate each part separately in subsequent portions Of the work. In especial, the various forms and gradations Of individual manual labor would be analyzed more fully than it has been possible to analyze them here; and a Similarly minute treatment would be applied to the directive faculties, from their simplest and most rudimentary up to their highest forms. The dynamics of motive, their relation to the general structure Of society, the difierent kinds Of life and effort imposed by nature on any society that aims at any kind of civilization, and many other subjects which need not be here specified, would all, in the same way, receive separate treatment. John Stuart Mill, Socialist
Author: Helen McCabe
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0228005949
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 284
Book Description
Best known as the author of On Liberty, John Stuart Mill remains a canonical figure in liberalism today. Yet according to his autobiography, by the mid-1840s he placed himself "under the general designation of Socialist." Taking this self-description seriously, John Stuart Mill, Socialist reinterprets Mill's work in its light. Helen McCabe explores the nineteenth-century political economist's core commitments to egalitarianism, social justice, social harmony, and a socialist utopia of cooperation, fairness, and human flourishing. Uncovering Mill's changing relationship with the radicalism of his youth and his excitement about the revolutionary events of 1848, McCabe argues that he saw liberal reforms as solutions to contemporary problems, while socialism was the path to a better future. In so doing, she casts new light on his political theory, including his theory of social progress; his support for democracy; his feminism; his concept of utility; his understanding of individuality; and his account of "the permanent interests of man as a progressive being," which is so central to his famous harm principle. As we look to rebuild the world in the wake of financial crises, climate change, and a global pandemic, John Stuart Mill, Socialist offers a radical rereading of the philosopher and a fresh perspective on contemporary meanings of socialism.
