Socialism and the Social Movement in the 19th Century PDF Author: Werner Sombart
Publisher: Good Press
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
This is a historical book by the German economist and sociologist Werner Sombart. The reader of this work will miss something which he has been accustomed to find in books on Socialism. Professor Sombart has not given us synopses of the theories of St. Simon, Proudhon, Marx, Owen, and others. His work marks the coming of a period in which socialism is to be studied in its evolving form as it progresses in practice and influence, rather than the past theories of socialists. A realistic outlook is the essence of it.

Book Description
Excerpt from Socialism and the Social Movement in the 19th Century: With a Chronicle of the Social Movement, 1750-1896 We may need a doctrinal basis for our view of the evolution that is going on; and we may find it in the works of Marx and others; but already we have ceased to have an absorbing interest in the contrasts and the resemblances that their several theories present. We have something to study that is more directly im portant than doctrinal history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Socialism and the Social Movement Socialism, in the meaning of the word here adopted, is the intellectual embodiment of the modern Social Move ment. That, in its turn, is the conception of all the attempts at emancipation on the part of the proletariat one of the social classes of our time. In order fully to understand the subject under discussion it will be meces sary to form a true notion of what is meant by a social class in general, and in particular Of the social class which is of special interest to us here. By the term social class, then, I understand a social group, the individuals of which are the representatives of some economic system. In using the words economic system I mean a given economic order, or an economic condition of things, which is characterized by one or more prominent economic principles. Any economic order is, in my view, the sum-total of all legal and moral ideas which regulate production and distribution for the time being; and economic principles is the name I give to that chain of motives which influences the economic activities of individuals. This will become clearer when we apply these abstract ideas to concrete conditions of the present day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Socialist Movement One of the greatest of the difficulties which beset the path of the Socialist is the refusal on the part of his opponents to give an accurate statement of what Socialism means and what the purpose of Socialism is. The main object of this book is to explain both. The Editors have asked a Conservative to explain Conservatism and a Liberal to interpret liberalism, and have on the same principle turned to me to write about Socialism. It is, perhaps, best that doctrines which are the objects of fierce assault should be explained by writers who believe in them, for, whether a doctrine is or is not to have a lasting influence depends not on the success with which clever critics attack some of its outworks, nor on the amount of error which creeps into its popular advocacy, but on the amount of truth which it really contains, and that is more familiar to friend than to foe. The Social Unrest

Book Description
Excerpt from The Social Unrest: Studies in Labor and Socialist Movements The nature of a good deal of the evidence in this volume is such as to require an explanation that is more personal than I could wish. This evidence may, perhaps, be less sharply criticised if a frank statement about it is made. I began, as do most stu dents of social and economic questions, with a too exclusive study of books. It was several years before I learned that for one branch of economic and social study, the live questions, like strikes, trade unions, the influence of machinery, etc., very few books existed that had more than slight value. Their treat ment of the subject was too general. Much of the literature is scarcely in print, before it is out of date because of the extraordinary mobility and change of our commercial order. The reaction of this swiftly changing mechanism upon our entire life gives us a series of problems but partially expressed in books and differing in important ways from anything that Europe offers. Book Description
Excerpt from An Inquiry Into Socialism For the present, however, we may say that socialism claims to be the economic and social side of a wider historical process, which in politics is democracy and in ethics means justice, humanity, and generous service to society a process which set in long ago, but whose' accumulating effects are only beginning to be really felt. While it professes first of all to be a movement for the deliverance of the poor, the aim of socialism is towards the renovation and progress Of the entire human society.
