Book Description
Excerpt from Socialism and Christianity Centuries before the birth of Christ, there lived a proud and despotic ruler of an Eastern kingdom who, surrounded by power and splendor, forgot the Lord of heaven and earth, trusting exclusively in the wealth of his country and the strength of his people. The prophet Daniel warned him against his impious ways, and besought him to forsake his iniquities, and to acknowledge that "the Most High ruleth over the kingdoms of men." But the king thought himself safe in the enjoyment of his glory and strength, and strutting up and down his gorgeous palace, he said with sinful pride: "Is not this the great Babylon which I have built to be the seat of the kingdom, by the strength of my power, and in the glory of my excellence?" Scarcely were these words out of his mouth, when the punishment of the Lord overtook him; he was degraded and cast out of the habitation of man, and likened to the brute beast of the field. Fortunately, his chastisement brought him to his senses. He now realized that all power and beauty came from above and that "all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing before their God." Book Description
Excerpt from Christian Socialism Dear Sir, I dedicate to you this little volume on Christian Socialism because you are the oldest surviving member of that movement in England, and one who has never ceased from the first to believe and to teach others to believe in the eternal principles of Truth, Hope, and Love in the pursuit of a higher social ideal. One of the original promoters of co-operation, itself the beloved offspring of Christian Socialism, its legal adviser in times when as yet it was unprotected by tho law, you have never since ceased to impress upon its members tho higher law of Christian love as a paramount force in society. While others have lost faith in their fellow-men and voluntary effort, you have continued, hoping against hope and with "munificent trustfulness" in principle, to advocate the cause of co-operative union on higher than commercial principles, to accentuate tho importance of the moral and religious factors in co-operative industry, and to aspire "after a union over widening into that all-embracing federation to which the social reformer looks forward." Book Description
Excerpt from Christianity and Socialism I cannot speak too warmly of the cor diality with which a Congregationalist was welcomed in this stronghold of the Meth odists, nor of the hospitality extended to him and to his message. And I wish that this little book might be a Witness to the unity of the Spirit which is binding our churches together in the bonds of peace. Excerpt from Christian Socialism, 1848-1854 College, and especially to Dr. R. H. Murray and Mr. G. T. Bennett, who have read the book in proof and whose criticisms upon it have been of the greatest assistance. My debt to the many writers from Whom I have quoted is apparent from the footnotes, and is particularly large in respect of the first chapter. Finally, I wish to express my deep gratitude to my colleagues at Emmanuel College Whose kindness in setting me free from the pressure of College business has enabled me. Book Description
Excerpt from Christianity and the Social Order It may not be out of place to say a word as to the way in which I have come to be identified with the Socialist movement. The first and most obvious influence in this direction was the study of Christian origins, which led me gradually but irresistibly to see that the first Christian preachers did not know of any other gospel than that of a universal brotherhood on earth. I have never been anything else than a liberal in theology - all assertions to the contrary notwith standing - but my way of presenting the truth in the earlier years of my ministry was necessarily less clear and coherent than at present, for it rested too much on the other-worldism of con ventional Christian preaching. The realisation that this other-worldism was totally absent from primitive Christian thought forced me, like so many others, upon What was practically the Socialist position without any first-hand acquaint ance with the Socialist movement itself. Inow regard Socialism as the practical expression of Christian ethics and the evangel of Jesus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Christian Socialism and Its Opponents And I trust that those of us who have entered upon this undertaking, have done so, not although, but be cause they were lawyers. It may be that the practice of litigation has led them to long for some more har monious resolution of social difficulties; it may be that the study of technicalities made them seek after some application of a more simple, and, as it were, living law; or, again, that the penning of verbose Acts of Parliament, destined to remain a dead letter to the masses, made them feel the gulf that separates the statute-book from the nation that it nominally rules; or that a familiarity with the construction of commer cial partnerships and companies made them more and more aware of the total absence of legal facilities for the association of Labour. They found thus, in this movement, 0 work ready to their hand, for portions at least of which all previous experience seemed to have specially fitted them; and whatever may or may not be the ill-results, upon their present or future earnings, of the step they have taken, I believe they have no reason to repent of it. They are still labouring in their vocation, fulfilling their appointed duties, learning to frame, learning to apply, a most real and practical law. Socialism in Church History (Classic Reprint)

Book Description
Excerpt from Socialism in Church History Many members of the Church of England are socialists, and would establish a commonwealth whose people should own the land and the industrial capital and administer them co-operatively for the good of all. Such public ownership they regard as urgent, and as a necessary deduction from the teachings of the Church. They are not communists but socialists. Far from seeking the abolition of private property or the curtailment of personal freedom, they desire such an industrial rearrangement of society as shall not only increase the national output but shall secure to the majority the wealth they produce and the liberty they have hitherto been denied. The Christian Faith cannot be summed up in the word socialism, nor should it be finally identified with any political or economic system. For all this, Churchmen are convinced that the principles which underlie socialism are, so far as they go, the principles of the Christian religion as applied to political, commercial, and industrial problems.
