Book Description
Excerpt from Sober Reflections on the Seditious and Inflammatory Letter of the Right Hon. Edmund Burke, to a Noble Lord: Addressed to the Serious Consideration of His Fellow Citizens As the following pages are intended, in some sort, as a reply to the inflammatory misrepresentations and incongruous principles of a recent pamphlet, from the elegant and abusive pen of Mr. Burke, it might have been expected, perhaps, that I should have followed the example of my antagonist, by throwing my observations into the form of a letter, and addressing it either to some great personage, or to that antagonist himself. But it has long been a principle with me, that, as far as it is practicable, at least, in the state of society in which we live, our open profession and our real object should always be the same; and I have been frequently disposed to suspect that all colourable pretences, all habits of subterfuge, even in circumstances of the most apparent indifference, have a tendency to weaken the moral feelings, and produce a bias of mind eminently unfavourable to rectitude of judgment, and that enthusiastic attachment to the cause of truth, which is, in reality, the noblest attribute of a cultivated understanding. Book Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. This collection reveals the history of English common law and Empire law in a vastly changing world of British expansion. Dominating the legal field is the Commentaries of the Law of England by Sir William Blackstone, which first appeared in 1765. Reference works such as almanacs and catalogues continue to educate us by revealing the day-to-day workings of society. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
