Load that same car and notice the percent at which its is braked, and you find it approximately 20% of the total loaded weight; when loaded, it does not do its share of braking. The empty car does, hence we see, it is-uneven braking of trains, and especially of long trains, which causeshocks, and not always the engineer. Some roads haul empties one way and loads the other, in these cases they run their brake pipe pressure up to 110 pounds, on the loaded train, and 70 pounds on the empty trains, which gives good results, and is the proper" way to overcome this trouble under existing conditions, as this is a hard proposition to handle. What effect would a leaky graduating valve of a triple have on that brake? The action produced by such a leak is uncertain, when the brake assumes lap, after the auxiliary pressure is a little less than that in the brake pipe, (or opposite side of the triple piston), if the graduating valve leaks, the auxiliary pressure generally reduces, and the brake pipe pressure forces the triple piston and slide valve back until the blank space on the face of the slide valve, between service port Z, and exhaust cavity N, is over brake cylinder port R. If this triple works very smoothly the brake will not release, but if not it will release, and especially if a small auxiliary leak exists. I will give the flow of the air through the brake valve.
