This title was first published in 2000: Since 1998, there have been many diagnoses, studies and theories attempting to explain the East Asian economic crisis and the impact on major economic and financial sectors. This text aims to fill a gap in the literature by examining the effects on small and medium-sized enterprises. From early 1998, unemployment figures in the region rose rapidly although large enterprises were not as yet engaged in corporate restructuring. Registered small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and microenterprises were a major source of this unemployment, especially among unskilled and seasonal workers. This volume covers the debate in five ways. An introductory chapter presents an overview of the SME international experience both in OECD and developing economies. Part I looks at the economic and social contribution of SMEs in Thailand before and after the 1997-1998 crisis and Part II reviews government policy and SME promotion initiatives. Part III explores the assumption that local SMEs linked to large firms have been more resilient, while the concluding chapter suggests a range of policies which have been derived from experiences in places other than Thailand.

In this paper, we examine idiosyncratic and systematic distress predictors for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Europe over the period 2000-2009. We find that SMEs across European regions are vulnerable to common idiosyncratic factors but systematic factors vary. Moreover, systematic factors move average distress rates and small SMEs are more vulnerable to these factors compared to large SMEs. By including many very small companies in the sample, our models offer unique insights into the European small business sector. By exploring distress in a multi-country setting, the models uncover regional vulnerabilities. Finally, by incorporating systematic dependencies, the models capture distress co-movements.

This paper examined the causes of business failures identified in extant research works to attempt to gain insight into the key mechanisms that account for entrepreneurial failure of micro and small businesses in their early stages in Kaduna State. A review of literature and questionnaire was used in an attempt to gain insight into the key factors of business failure. A small sample of early/middle stage entrepreneurial firms was surveyed through careful empirical data collection and interviews with the owner mangers or employees. This paper identifies business failure in terms of specific firm behaviours on the following five (5) dimensions: Falling Profitability, Early stage stagnation for a period of 5 years of establishment, Managerial incapacity, inconsistent cash flows, and undercapitalization. In all this factors, undercapitalization is most significant distress factor at start up. Enterprise support services and discretionary finance for start-ups is advocated. The distress factors should serve as basis for intervention in business support by governments and business support institutions.
