Typhoid Fever

Typhoid Fever PDF Author: Richard Adler
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786497815
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
In the 21st century, typhoid fever afflicts more than 21 million people each year, primarily in underdeveloped countries. In the age before sanitation and antibiotics, the infection was even more devastating, crippling entire armies and claiming the lives of both rich and poor. The story of typhoid is in many ways the story of modern medicine itself, with early efforts at treatment and prevention paving the way for our understanding of infectious disease in general. Many sought to understand and control the disease, including Robert Koch and Walter Reed. There were unsung heroes as well: Pierre Louis and William Gerhard, among the first to identify the disease's unique nature; William Budd, whose studies demonstrated its transmission through feces; and Georges Widal, whose test for the disease continues to be used in some areas. This book chronicles the fight against typhoid in the words of these and other medical pioneers, showing how far we have come and how far we have yet to go.

A Practical Treatise on Typhoid and All Other Slow Fevers Broken in Fourteen Days (Classic Reprint)

A Practical Treatise on Typhoid and All Other Slow Fevers Broken in Fourteen Days (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: William F. Hooper
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780265856826
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Typhoid and All Other Slow Fevers Broken in Fourteen Days As the writer has so greatly lessened the mortality, and shortened the duration of typhoid fever than as given in text books, he has for this reason set this work before the public. The reader is requested to examine the chapter on the treatment and formulas at the close of the book before begin ning to read the work. In order to clearly set forth the basis upon which this work is founded, namely, the vaso-motor capillary systems and the sympathetic nervous system, the author has quoted the direct words of the American Text-book of Physiology, and also from Hare on Practical Therapeutics. And in order for the author to prove or disapprove his own ideas, he has also quoted some of the exact words of Nothnagel and Osler themselves. In order to prove that some of the commonly accepted ideas of Osler and Nothnagel are illogical and erroneous, the author has quoted a few of the exact words of these authors. The author is greatly indebted to Hektoen and Riesman for their ideas, as seen in their work on Pathology as pertain ing to the probability of the typhoid bacilli being nothing more than a rejuvenated colon bacilli.
