The present work examines the case of cross- border cooperation (CBC) between Italy and Slovenia, with particular regard to the construction of town twinning, i.e. territorial integration between Gorizia- Nova Gorizia and Trieste- Koper, in the light of the establishment of broader euroregions. Transboundary regionalization between Italy and Slovenia has become an international model due to the long historical tradition, to the Matrio ka model and to the comprehensive approach towards CBC. The borderland can be taken as a paradigmatic example of successful cooperation along the former East- West divide. The SWOT analysis, used in order to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the borderland, confirms this hypothesis."

This book examines the effects of Europeanization on two cross-border states, Italy and Slovenia, in the period between 1990 and 2012. It does so by means of an analysis of specific funding programmes such as Interreg and Phare. The book explores whether Europeanization, through cross-border cooperation, has promoted a post-national mode of governance and new relations between the national, the supra-national and the local-regional level. It discusses whether a link can be established between the activities of sub-national actors (municipalities, regions) and the recent development of legal instruments designed to enhance cross-border cooperation. In the early 1990s, borders within Europe and between the United States and Mexico began to open. The increasing flow of goods, capital, ideas and people across boundaries promised to reduce physical and cognitive distances. Simultaneously, challenges to identity have arisen within and between the European nation-states, driven not only by internal cultural and political dynamics, but also by processes of globalization. Concurrently, the US-Mexican border emerged in public consciousness as a location of new opportunities, largely due to public perception of the benefits of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
