We want no interference with our affairs by Congress feeling that we are fully competent to settle these matters ourselves. We want to be let alone. Book Description
Excerpt from Slavery in the United States Hitherto, almost all that has appeared on the subject has been on one side. The horrors of sla very have been depicted in such glowing colours as to blind us to the consequences that may, and assuredly will result from attempting to get rid of it in the summary manner demanded by the advo cates of immediate abolition, who, one might al most be tempted to believe, consider it the only evil existing in the world. Regard to the honour of our country justice to a great body of as upright, honourable, and humane citizens as any nation can boast; respect to the laws of the land, and rev erence for the constitution, seem to demand that the reverse of the picture should be seen; that the mischiefs to be remedied, the cost of the remedy, and the good to be gained by its application, should be camly considered, in order that all may, if they please, see for themselves and decide for them selves, whether, ih attempting to get rid of one evil, we may not inflict others of far greater magnitude whether, in short, by applying rash and unskilful remedies, we may not kill the patient. We will neither import nor purchase any slave imported after the first day of December next; after which time we will wholly discontinue the slave trade, and will neither be concerned in it ourselves, nor will we hire our vessels nor sell our commodities or manufactures to those who are concerned in it. The foregoing association being determined upon by the Congress, was ordered to be subscribed by the several members thereof; and, thereupon, we have hereunto set our respective names accordingly. Book Description
Excerpt from Two Letters on Slavery in the United States Sir: - I received a short time ago, a letter from the Rev. Willouguby M.Dickinson, dated at your residence, Playford Hall, near Ipswich, 26 ih Nov., 1844, in which was inclosed a copy of your Circular Letter addressed to professing Christians in our Northern States, having no concern wiih Slavery, and to others there. I presume that Mr. Dickinsons letter was written with your knowledge, and the document inclosed with your consent and approbation. I therefore feel that there is no impropriety in my addressing my reply directly to yourself, especially as there is nothing in Mr. Dickinsons communication, requiring serious notice. Having abundant leisure, it will be a recreation to me to devote a portion of it to an examination and free discussion of the question of Slavery as it exists in our Southern States: and since you have thrown down the gauntlet to me, I do not hesitate to take it up. Familiar as you have been with the discussions of this subject in all its aspects, and under all the excitements it has occasioned for sixty years past, I may not be able to present much that will be new to you. Nor ought I to indulge the hope of materially affecting the opinions you have so long cherished, and so zealously promulgated. Book Description
Excerpt from The Progress of Slavery in the United States The design of this volume, as indicated by its title is to describe the past progress of slavery in the United States, and to consider the circumstances which will probably control its movement hereafter. The economy, morals, and effects of slavery, are discussed only inci dentally, and so far as such discussion was unavoidable; it having been the main purpose of the author to deal with the progress of slavery as a matter of fact, accomplished in the past, and to be dis cerned in the future by the aid of such lights as experience and reason may afford. Book Description
Excerpt from Picture of Slavery in the United States of America Where is the charter found to sanctify Despotic, base, unqualified control, O'er strength and will, by man enthroned o'er man? In Revelation's code you find it not, Nor in Creation's multifarious laws. The will of Heaven, when unrevealed by Christ, Or by the sacred organs of his word, Is sought and found in the primeval light, Which Nature sheds through her expanded spheres. But when with Gospel-day this light combines, The fool who doubts, who asks for clearer proof Must hood-wink'd be indeed, and darkness love. That such resistless evidence obtains, To evince Demoniac Slavery's turpitude, With all the powers of brightest Truth appears, To the impartial mind that views each source, Whence the full streams of testimony flow. Each text of Sacred Writ enjoining love, Affection, justice, mercy, meekness, peace, And piety, establishes this truth, That Slavery contravenes the law of God! Book Description
Excerpt from American Slavery and Colour The sight of a few Slave Sales has a wonderful efi'ect in awakening the feelings on the subject of Slavery. The thing is seen to be an undeniable reality - no mere invention of the novelist. From time to time, the spectacle of an auction-stand on which one man is selling another, flashes back upon the mind. For three years, I have been haunted by recollections of that saddening scene, and taken a gradually deepening interest in American Slavery -its present condition, its mysterious future. Having already referred to the subject, I should not again have intruded on public notice, but for the recent exciting discussions concerning Slavery, the protracted struggle in Kansas, and the probability of further contests between Slavery and Freedom, consequent on the organisation of new States in the southern section of the Union.
