Sky, Wind, and Stars PDF Author: Dongju Yun
Publisher: Jain Publishing Company
ISBN: 0895818264
Category : Literary Criticism

Pages : 120

Book Description
Born and raised in northern Manchuria during the colonial period of Korea, Yun Dong-ju was a poet of the utmost purity, beauty, and sincerity. His posthumously published collection of poems under the title Sky, wind, stars, and poems is one of the all-time favorites of Korean readers. Wishing not to have so much as a speck of shame toward heaven until the day I die, I suffered, even when the wind stirred the leaves. (From Foreword) In simple diction and straightforward expressions, his poems sing of his love for his people, his compassion for the poor and destitute, and his hopes for freedom and independence. These themes still resonate deep within the hearts of the Korean people. His imprisonment and eventual death in 1945 in a Japanese prison lend great poignancy to his work.

Book Description
It is very difficult to translate the literary works of Korea into a foreign language, and so it can’t be done without mental anguish and tenacity. Especially, in the case of a poem, its implication and nuance makes the translation difficult, and can result in a mistranslation and a reader’s misunderstanding. I, as the translator of this book, get pleasure from reading the classics of the Orient all the time, and through this I am accustomed to the habit of soothing so-so life which stealthily approaches me. Based on these understanding and habit, I, from the English department, decided to translate these poems into English while I think of doing something valuable and enhancing my presence. What we can possibly make a mistake in translating a poem into a foreign language is that we are likely to translate it as we describe it. I translated these poems which the author wrote as they are, and this book is written in easy and suitable English. I have translated the national poet of Korea, Yun, Dong-Ju’s poems into English and give it to the world. I dare to hope that this book will be read all over the world.

Azaleas

Azaleas PDF Author: So-wŏl Kim
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231139721
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
Available for the first time in English, Azaleas is a captivating collection of poems by a master of the early Korean modernist style. Published in 1925, Azaleas is the only collection Kim Sowol (1902-1934) produced during his brief life, yet he remains one of Korea's most beloved and well-known poets. His work is a delightful and sophisticated blend of the images, tonalities, and rhythms of traditional Korean folk songs with surprisingly modern forms and themes. Sowol is also known for his unique and sometimes unsettling perspective, expressed through loneliness, longing, and a creative use of dream imagery-a reflection of Sowol's engagement with French Symbolist poetry. Azaleas recounts the journey of a young Korean as he travels from the northern P'yongyang area near to the cosmopolitan capital of Seoul. Told through an array of voices, the poems describe the young man's actions as he leaves home, his experiences as a student and writer in Seoul, and his return north. Although considered a landmark of Korean literature, Azaleas speaks to readers from all cultures. An essay by Sowol's mentor, the poet Kim Ok, concludes the collection and provides vital insight into Sowol's work and life. This elegant translation by David R. McCann, an expert on modern Korean poetry, maintains the immediacy and richness of Sowol's work and shares with English-language readers the quiet beauty of a poet who continues to cast a powerful spell on generations of Korean readers.

Map to the Stars

Map to the Stars PDF Author: Adrian Matejka
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1524704148
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 130

Book Description
A resonant new collection of poetry from Adrian Matejka, author of The Big Smoke, a finalist for The Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award Map to the Stars, the fourth poetry collection from National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize finalist Adrian Matejka, navigates the tensions between race, geography, and poverty in America during the Reagan Era. In the time of space shuttles and the Strategic Defense Initiative, outer space is the only place equality seems possible, even as the stars serve to both guide and obscure the earthly complexities of masculinity and migration. In Matejka's poems, hope is the link between the convoluted realities of being poor and the inspiring possibilities of transcendence and escape—whether it comes from Star Trek, the dream of being one of the first black astronauts, or Sun Ra's cosmic jazz.
