Book Description
Excerpt from The Ski-Runner When in 1904 I edited and, in part, wrote "Ski-Running," it was my intention in subsequent editions to keep the book in all respects up-to-date. This intention was fulfilled when the second edition appeared in the following year; but since then, owing to differences of opinion, by no means of an unfriendly nature, between myself and my co-authors, it has been impossible for me to make any additions or alterations. When Dr. Hoek brought out his German book on the subject, entitled "Der Schilauf," it was arranged between us that he should use as much of my matter as seemed good to him, whilst his matter should be at my disposal for any subsequent editions of "Ski-Running" which might appear. This permission he has been kind enough to transfer to the present work. The book which I am now issuing is thus to some extent based on "Der Schilauf," which, in its turn, is to some extent based on "Ski-Running." I soon found, however, when I began to write, that there was much in both of these treatises which I desired to express differently, and that there was a great deal of entirely new matter to be added. The "Ski-Runner," in fact, differs considerably from any of its predecessors. The most noticeable changes are as follows: - The historical chapter has been expanded and brought up to date. The chapter on outfit contains a great deal of information as to the best kind of wood for ski. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Cross-Country Ski-Ing For his first season the following are essential he must possess good skis, a pair of ski-ing boots, two ski sticks, sealskins, a rucksack and two or three pairs of gloves and some protection for his ears if the weather turns cold. This complete outfit can be purchased for less than a five-pound note. Whereas the golfer is always having to buy new balls, the ski runner who treats his skis properly will find that a good pair of skis will last him for several seasons. Book Description
Excerpt from Ski-Ing This book is written primarily for beginners. It is chiefly written for those who have never yet visited the winter Alps, and who are utterly ignorant of all matters of outfit and expenditure. To these I would say make up your mind that you are sure to ski. Before you leave England you may perhaps fancy that you are going to skate or toboggan. You may believe that ski-ing is a vastly dangerous sport fitted to the young and adventurous. Possibly you may add that skating is possible in England, which seems to some a reason for neglecting everything else in the Alps. I have never been able to understand this position unless it is equivalent to saying that the skater has more Opportunity of displaying his prowess in England than the ski-runner, and therefore. Escape on Skis (Classic Reprint)

Escape on Skis (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Brian Meredith
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780332832647

Pages : 306

Book Description
Excerpt from Escape on Skis But for those who live in outer darkness and Wish to know what ski-ing feels like, or to those children of light who know, but love to renew the old familiar thrills, this is just the book. The whole essence of what the author sums up as the most exciting and satisfactory way of travelling is here distilled in a narrative which resembles a good day on skis for its delightfully inconsequent variety, its joyous incidents, and its absence of any set purpose outside the story itself. But for those, still able-bodied, who are determined never to ski, or never to ski again, and who think they have no need for escape, I would strongly deprecate the study of so infectiously enthusiastic a votary of the wing-footed sport.
