Loyalty on the Frontier, Or, Sketches of Union Men of the South-west

Loyalty on the Frontier, Or, Sketches of Union Men of the South-west PDF Author: Albert Webb Bishop
Publisher: University of Arkansas Press
ISBN: 9781557287571
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
First published in 1863, this book has the immediacy, passion, and intimacy of its wartime context. It tells the remarkable story of Albert Webb Bishop, a New York lawyer turned Union soldier, who in 1862 accepted a commission as lieutenant colonel in a regiment of Ozark mountaineers. While maintaining Union control of northwest Arkansas, he collected stories of the social coercion, political secession, and brutal terrorism that scarred the region. His larger goal, however, was to popularize and inspire sympathy for the South's Unionists and to chronicle the triumph of Unionism in a Confederate state. His account points to the complex and divisive nature of Confederate society and in doing so provides a perspective that has long been absent from discussions of the Civil War.

Iowa History Reader

Iowa History Reader PDF Author: Marvin Bergman
Publisher: University of Iowa Press
ISBN: 1609380118
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 470

Book Description
In 1978 historian Joseph Wall wrote that Iowa was “still seeking to assert its own identity. . . . It has no real center where the elite of either power, wealth, or culture may congregate. Iowa, in short, is middle America.” In this collection of well-written and accessible essays, originally published in 1996, seventeen of the Hawkeye State’s most accomplished historians reflect upon the dramatic and not-so-dramatic shifts in the middle land’s history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Marvin Bergman has drawn upon his years of editing the Annals of Iowa to gather contributors who cross disciplines, model the craft of writing a historical essay, cover more than one significant topic, and above all interpret history rather than recite it. In his preface to this new printing, he calls attention to publications that begin to fill the gaps noted in the 1996 edition. Rather than survey the basic facts, the essayists engage readers in the actual making of Iowa’s history by trying to understand the meaning of its past. By providing comprehensive accounts of topics in Iowa history that embrace the broader historiographical issues in American history, such as the nature of Progressivism and Populism, the debate over whether women’s expanded roles in wartime carried over to postwar periods, and the place of quantification in history, the essayists contribute substantially to debates at the national level at the same time that they interpret Iowa’s distinctive culture.

Pottery, Politics, Art

Pottery, Politics, Art PDF Author: Richard D. Mohr
Publisher: University of Illinois Press
ISBN: 9780252027895
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
Pottery, Politics, Art uses the medium of clay to explore the nature of spectacle, bodies, and boundaries. The book analyzes the sexual and social obsessions of three of America's most intense potters, artists who used the liminal potentials of clay to explore the horrors and delights of our animal selves. Richard D. Mohr revives from undeserved obscurity the far-southern Illinois potting brothers Cornwall and Wallace Kirkpatrick (1814-90, 1828-96) and examines the significance of the haunting, witty, and grotesque wares of the brothers' Anna Pottery (1859-96). He then traces the Kirkpatricks' decisive influence on a central figure in the American Arts and Crafts movement, George Ohr (1857-1918), known as the Mad Potter of Biloxi and arguably America's greatest potter. Finally, Mohr gives a new reading to Ohr's contorted, yet lyrical and ecstatic works. Abundant full-color and black-and-white photographs illustrate this remarkable art.
