The problem under consideration is the physiographic succession in beach pools, which are formed along the shores Of larger lakes by wind and current action, and the corresponding ecological succession in the molluscs they contain. Douglas Lake, in Cheboygan County near the northern end Of the Southern Peninsula of Michigan, has a number of pools in different stages of formation, and the data given here was mostly collected in that region during the summers of 1911, 1912, and 1913. Less complete studies were also made in Saginaw Bay, Off Lake Huron, during the summer of and some mention of these pools will also be made in this paper. Book Description
Excerpt from Nineteenth Annual Report of the Michigan Academy of Science, 1917: Prepared Under the Direction of the Council The process of eruption within a volcanic vent as regards its physical and chemical aspects offers a problem which, though by no means simple, may yet be subjected to Observation and experimentation and doubtless belongs to the realm of soluble scientific problems. The materials present at the earth's center and their peculiar state of aggregation, are by contrast very largely a subject of conjecture, and attempts to class these problems together lead to inexcusable confusion. A theory has been defined as an explanation founded upon inferences drawn from principles which are established by evidence. By contrast the hypothesis is a supposition as yet untested. The working hypothesis of the scientist occupies an intermediate position and aims to explain, at least in part and better than any other, a set of related phenomena which are already known, and it is considered to be in a probationary stage until confirmed through rigid tests the nature of which is suggested by the hypothesis itself. When SO examined it may be found wanting; but, if well founded, experimentation is likely to result in its improve ment by pruning of error quite as much as through enlargement of the body Of truth which it contains. Book Description
Excerpt from Eleventh Report of the Michigan Academy of Science: Ann Arbor, March 31, April 1 and 2, 1909 At the very outset, one diversive thought appeals to me for recognition. In an untechnical or popular development of a general conception or idea such as is designed in this address, evidence which provides substantiation can only be inferred, and cannot be subjected to a satisfactory and critical review. This feature will cause a mental jolt to the investigator who would seek the basis for every statement, but, on the other hand, it has been planned to deal with an audience of general scientific training, rather than specialists who are more or less thoroughly familiar with the material which we have to offer. Book Description
Excerpt from Second Report of the Michigan Academy of Science for the Year Ending June 30, 1900: Prepared Under the Direction of the Council Fundamentally the sperm is not alone the energizing, it is the actual being that continues the race. The ovum is primarily but the bricks and mortar, as it were, that the sperm, the builder, employs in the construction of the house. Coming, however, into such relation to this cell as to employ its machinery it necessarily is brought to the center and thus to the nucleus of the egg. Entangling this in its meshes, the female pro-nucleus is perforce incorporated in the plan. But the mechanism is not adapted to the utilization of so many chromosomes. There are twice as many as can be utilized by the ovular machinery. The remainder are therefore set aside, and, as only impedimenta in subsequent processes, are 'cast out as a second polar corpuscle. That this reducing division in both egg and sperm later occurs, by tachygenesis, before fertilization is but' an added safeguard to assure perfect cross-fertilization; for only thus can there be certainty of equal representation or, indeed, of one parent being at all represented in fertilization.
