Much useful information on the likely ground behaviour can be gained from a good description of the soil or rock encountered. To obtain a proper description of the ground, the soil must be examined in its natural state; trial pits and, where appropriate, boreholes should therefore be excavated to a layout plan proposed in advance. The investigation should be based on knowledge gained from the desk study and walk-over survey. It must take into account the variations in the topography and local geology of the site, together with the anticipated layout of the building and its foundations. This Digest explains how to make an accurate description of soil. It does not consider the description of rocks in any detail, though many aspects of soil description are also applicable to them.
