Crack Growth Resistance Measurement by Crack Opening Displacement Methods
Author: DE. McCabe
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Compact specimens
Languages : en
Pages : 18
Book Description
In a previous investigation, tests had been conducted on compact specimens made of A508 Class 2A steel to study specimen geometry effects on JR-Curve behavior. No particular geometry effects were shown in specimens ranging in size from 1⁄2T to 10T when conditions for J-controlled growth were satisfied. These same specimens had been instrumented to develop crack opening displacement (COD) toughness values using a plastic hinge model. The COD-type R-Curve behavior was examined herein for specimen geometry effects and crack opening angle (COA) behavior.

A New Method for the Determination of the Critical Value of Crack Tip Opening Displacement at the Initiation of Crack Growth Using a Single Three-Point Bend Specimen
Author: Z. Lai
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Cocaine-Related Disorders
Languages : en
Pages : 6
Book Description
An analytical method for the determination of critical value of crack tip opening displacement at initiation of crack growth ?c of a three-point bend specimen is presented. It is based on the formulation of subcritical crack growth in such a specimen. The values of ?c obtained by this single specimen method are in excellent agreement with those obtained by the standard multispecimen method. It is emphasized that it would be necessary to use blunting line correction when the multispecimen method is used.

Stability Analysis of J-Controlled Crack Growth
Author: JW. Hutchinson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Crack propagation
Languages : en
Pages : 28
Book Description
The theoretical basis for use of the J-integral in crack growth analysis is discussed and conditions for J-controlled growth are obtained. Calculations related to the stability of crack growth are carried out for several deeply cracked specimen configurations. Relatively simple formulas are obtained which, in certain cases, permit an assessment of stability using data from a single load-displacement record. Numerical results for a bend specimen and for a center-cracked specimen illustrate the influence of strain-hardening and system compliance on stability.

An Evaluation of Elastic-Plastic Methods Applied to Crack Growth Resistance Measurements
Author: JD. Landes
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Compliance, cracks
Languages : en
Pages : 19
Book Description
Information from tests on blunt notched specimens for J-integral calibration by conventional J = -1/B ?U/?a analysis is used to evaluate the significance of plastic zone adjustment to physical crack length in crack growth resistance, KR, calculations. Secants are drawn to load versus displacement test records to determine plastic zone adjusted crack lengths. Tests on three specimen geometries [compact specimen (CS), single-edge notched bend (SENB), and center-notched tension (CNT)] and on two materials (HY130 steel and 2024 aluminum) have shown that this procedure develops KR values that are equivalent to J. This demonstration opens possibilities that J can now be applied to cases where there is subcritical crack growth such as in R-curve work, KIscc, and possibly in creep cracking studies. Also, this provides a simplified method for computing J experimentally on complex geometries for which elastic KI solutions are available.
