The over-all purpose of the program is to investigate the problems of air-worthiness standards applied to the supersonic transport (SST). The general objectives are (1) to identify any shortcomings of the operating margins criteria regarding inadvertent speed increases, (2) to evaluate instrument methods by which pilots can efficiently and safely follow Mach altitude climb and descent schedules, (3) to determine the limitations of the present static longitudinal requirements and certification test procedures, (4) to evaluate handling qualities parameters, and (5) to make recommendations for revisions to the present regulations. The program was performed on a moving-base transport simulator and on a fixed-base XB-70 simulator. The work was accomplished in six individual programs with five experienced test pilots participating. The flight envelope was from 0 to 80,000 feet altitude and from Mach 0.2 to 3.2. Several of the conclusions modify currently held concepts.
