Simulation of Three-Dimensional Turbulent Flows with a Vortex-in-Cell Method

Simulation of Three-Dimensional Turbulent Flows with a Vortex-in-Cell Method PDF Author: Benoit Couet
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 38

Book Description
A new method for the numerical simulation of three-dimensional incompressible flows is described. Our vortex-in-cell (VIC) method traces the motion of the vortex filaments in the velocity field these filaments create on an Eulerian mesh via the fast integration of a Poisson equation. By incorporating the viscous or subgrid-scale effects into a filtering procedure, the computed scales of motion are assumed to be essentially inviscid. Results on tracing a periodic array of single vortex rings are compared with a Green's function calculation. (Author).

Evolution of Turbulence by Three-dimensional Numerical Particle-vortex Tracing

Evolution of Turbulence by Three-dimensional Numerical Particle-vortex Tracing PDF Author: Benoit Couët

Category : Fluid dynamics

Pages : 140

Book Description
A new method for the numerical simulation of three-dimensional incompressible flows is described. Our vortex-in-cell (VIC) method traces the motion of the vortex filaments in the velocity field which these filaments create. The velocity field is not calculated by creating a mesh-record of the vorticity field, then integrating a Poisson's equation via the fast Fourier transform to get the stream function and generating a mesh-record of the velocity field. The computed scales of motion are assumed to be essentially inviscid. Viscous or subgrid-scale effects are incorporated into a filtering procedure in wave vector space. Three computational experiments were pursued in three-dimensional space. The velocity of translation of a single vortex ring was measured and compared with the Biot-Savart law. Next, the evolution in time of an infinite periodic array of closed vortex filaments (Taylor-Green) was studied. The third simulation follows a mixing layer from an initial state of uniform vorticity with two- and three-dimensional small perturbations. Streamwise perturbations lead to the usual roll-up of vortex patterns with spanwise uniformity.

Particle Image Velocimetry

Particle Image Velocimetry PDF Author: Ronald J. Adrian
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 0521440084
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 585

Book Description
Particle image velocimetry, or PIV, refers to a class of methods used in experimental fluid mechanics to determine instantaneous fields of the vector velocity by measuring the displacements of numerous fine particles that accurately follow the motion of the fluid. Although the concept of measuring particle displacements is simple in essence, the factors that need to be addressed to design and implement PIV systems that achieve reliable, accurate, and fast measurements and to interpret the results are surprisingly numerous. The aim of this book is to analyze and explain them comprehensively.

Vortex Dynamics

Vortex Dynamics PDF Author: P. G. Saffman
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521477390
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 332

Book Description
Vortex dynamics is a natural paradigm for the field of chaotic motion and modern dynamical system theory. However, this volume focuses on those aspects of fluid motion that are primarily controlled by the vorticity and are such that the effects of the other fluid properties are secondary.

Vortex Methods and Vortex Motion

Vortex Methods and Vortex Motion PDF Author: Karl E. Gustafson
Publisher: SIAM
ISBN: 9781611971736
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 220

Book Description
Vortex methods have emerged as a new class of powerful numerical techniques to analyze and compute vortex motion. This book addresses the theoretical, numerical, computational, and physical aspects of vortex methods and vortex motion. Vortex phenomena in fluid flows and the experimental, theoretical, and numerical methods used to characterize them are discussed in reviews by leading experts. Extensive photographs and sample computer graphics are provided. The development of large vortex structure in fluid flow is responsible for some of the most fascinating aspects of fluid dynamics, such as mixing, shearing, transport, and instability. Such issues arise in a variety of flow regimes, ranging from fundamental mathematical questions in laminar, transitional, and turbulent flow to sophisticated engineering settings and devices.
