Strategic Planning and Modeling in Property-Liability Insurance
Author: J. David Cummins
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400956584
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
The Geneva Association and Risk Economics The Geneva Association The Geneva Association (International Association for the Study of Insurance Economics) commenced its activities in June 1973, on the initiative of twenty-two members in eight European countries. It now has fifty-four members in sixteen countries in Europe and in the United States. The members of the association are insurance companies which provide financial support for its activities. The aims and strategy of the Geneva Association were clearly defined in 1971 by the founding committee. They were set forth in the first report to the Assembly of Members in 1974: "To make an original contribution to the progress of insurance by objective studies on the interdependence between economics and insurance." In pursuit of this objective, the Association strives to place insurance problems in the context of the modern economy and to overcome the antagonism between different groups and institutions by showing that they all have a common interest in tackling the problem of risk in a changing world. In consequence, the studies made by the Association had to move away from the subjects familiar to insurance professionals and explore related fields, dealing with opinions and behavior falling outside the profession's vii FOREWORD viii traditional framework of analysis. It is in this direction that the Association's preoccupations have been directed from the beginning, towards areas in which insurance activities come into contact with those of other economic sectors such as government, banking, manufacturing, and households.

Thomas Naylor’s Paths to Peace
Author: William L. Benzon
Publisher: Wheatmark, Inc.
ISBN: 1627876294
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 133
Book Description
"A small-state world would not only solve the problems of social brutality and war; it would solve the problems of oppression and tyranny. It would solve all problems arising from power." — Leopold Kohr, Breakdown of Nations This insight was Thomas Naylor's lodestone; it informed and animated everything he did. Primarily an economist -- who taught at Duke University, University of Wisconsin, Middlebury College, and the University of Vermont -- he had also been a businessman, running a small software firm, advising corporations and governments in over thirty countries, an activity that lead him to predict the political upheavals of the Soviet Union. He moved to Vermont in 1990 in search of a human-scale community, which he found, and a decade later founded the Second Vermont Republic, which advocated Vermont secession from the USA to become an independent state, which it had been from 1777 to 1791. Time magazine named the Second Vermont Republic as one of the “Top 10 Aspiring Nations” in the world as recently as 2011. Are you curious about how the twenty-six Swiss cantons support local autonomy and direct democracy in this small nation with four official languages? Did you know that the world is afire with secession movements? What about an organization in which the small nations of the world band together as a counterweight to the unproductive, and often destructive, activities of the "Big Powers" (e.g. Russia in Chechnya, China in Tibet and Xinjiang Province, US in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen and so many other countries)? Thomas Naylor's Paths to Peace addresses these topics and includes a long interview in which Naylor places his ideas and activism in the context of his life. A fond eulogy by Kirkpatrick Sale and a foreword and afterward by Charlie Keil place Naylor's life and work in a larger context.

Current Issues in Computer Simulation
Author: Nabil R. Adam
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483258033
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 313
Book Description
Current Issues in Computer Simulation is a collection of papers dealing with computer simulation languages, statistical aspects of simulation, linkage with optimization and analytical models, as well as theory and application of simulation methodology. Some papers explain the General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS), a programming package incorporating a language to simulate discrete systems; and the SIMSCRIPT, a general-purpose simulation language using English commands, for example, FORTRAN. Another simulation language is the General Activity Simulation Program (GASP), providing for an organizational structure to build models to simulate the dynamic performance of systems on a digital computer. Other papers discuss simulation models of real systems, including corporate simulation models, multistage consumer choice process, determination of maximum occupancy for hospital facilities, and the juvenile court system. Many computer simulations are statistical sampling experiments performed on a model of the system under investigation. Other papers discuss some of the variables involved in the statistical design and analysis of simulation experiments such as variance reduction techniques, generation of random variates, and experimental layout. For example, one application simulates inventory systems when many items are stocked in various locations. The collection is suitable for programmers, computer engineers, businessmen, hospital administrators, schools officials, and depositories of huge volumes of information or data.
