Probabilistic Structural Mechanics Handbook

Probabilistic Structural Mechanics Handbook PDF Author: C.R. Sundararajan
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461517710
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 756

Book Description
The need for a comprehensive book on probabilistic structural mechanics that brings together the many analytical and computational methods developed over the years and their applications in a wide spectrum of industries-from residential buildings to nuclear power plants, from bridges to pressure vessels, from steel structures to ceramic structures-became evident from the many discussions the editor had with practising engineers, researchers and professors. Because no single individual has the expertise to write a book with such a di.verse scope, a group of 39 authors from universities, research laboratories, and industries from six countries in three continents was invited to write 30 chapters covering the various aspects of probabilistic structural mechanics. The editor and the authors believe that this handbook will serve as a reference text to practicing engineers, teachers, students and researchers. It may also be used as a textbook for graduate-level courses in probabilistic structural mechanics. The editor wishes to thank the chapter authors for their contributions. This handbook would not have been a reality without their collaboration.

Wasn’t That a Mighty Day

Wasn’t That a Mighty Day PDF Author: Luigi Monge
Publisher: Univ. Press of Mississippi
ISBN: 1496841794
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 388

Book Description
Wasn’t That a Mighty Day: African American Blues and Gospel Songs on Disaster takes a comprehensive look at sacred and secular disaster songs, shining a spotlight on their historical and cultural importance. Featuring newly transcribed lyrics, the book offers sustained attention to how both Black and white communities responded to many of the tragic events that occurred before the mid-1950s. Through detailed textual analysis, Luigi Monge explores songs on natural disasters (hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and earthquakes); accidental disasters (sinkings, fires, train wrecks, explosions, and air disasters); and infestations, epidemics, and diseases (the boll weevil, the jake leg, and influenza). Analyzed songs cover some of the most well-known disasters of the time period from the sinking of the Titanic and the 1930 drought to the Hindenburg accident, and more. Thirty previously unreleased African American disaster songs appear in this volume for the first time, revealing their pertinence to the relevant disasters. By comparing the song lyrics to critical moments in history, Monge is able to explore how deeply and directly these catastrophes affected Black communities; how African Americans in general, and blues and gospel singers in particular, faced and reacted to disaster; whether these collective tragedies prompted different reactions among white people and, if so, why; and more broadly, how the role of memory in recounting and commenting on historical and cultural facts shaped African American society from 1879 to 1955.

Texas Mass Graves

Texas Mass Graves PDF Author: Kathy Benjamin
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1439676380
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
Every mass grave in Texas offers morbid proof that at one time, in that place, something went very, very wrong. Texans have resorted to mass graves out of necessity, desperation and appalling indifference. These sites mark natural disasters or hide unnatural crimes that tested the limits of human endurance and empathy. Because of this, memorializing those who lie in mass graves can be controversial. Not everyone wants to dig up the darkness of the past, much less admit that the dirt is still fresh. Nevertheless, to honor those whose bones lie mixed with others, their stories must be told. In so doing, Kathy Benjamin exhumes essential shards of Lone Star history, from the Alamo to the present day.

Children and Youth With Asperger Syndrome

Children and Youth With Asperger Syndrome PDF Author: Brenda Smith Myles
Publisher: Corwin Press
ISBN: 1483304264
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 201

Book Description
"This comprehensive, thoughtful, and clearly written book provides helpful strategies for educational professionals to teach children and youth with Asperger syndrome (AS). Every teacher interested in AS will want to read this book." —Susan Moreno, President MAAP Services for Autism & Asperger Syndrome How can you make the school year successful for your students with Asperger syndrome? Asperger syndrome (AS) is a disorder in the autism spectrum, and students with AS suffer from similar, though milder, symptoms as students with autism. Classroom teachers who are charged with teaching students with AS generally have not been provided the skills and knowledge to do so. Crafting and implementing plans for students is nearly impossible without a clear understanding of the disorder, or clearly defined instructional methods and strategies. Children and Youth With Asperger Syndrome provides important strategies in teaching children and youth diagnosed with AS. This essential resource for teachers and other educators presents research-based, instructional, behavioral, and environmental strategies for teachers, including: Adaptations for success in general education settings Environmental modifications, including visual supports and organizational strategies Technology accommodations Transition planning Emotional, behavioral, and social supports Children and youth with AS are often misunderstood. These individuals have great potential that frequently remains unrealized because the modifications they require to be successful are not made. By using the practical strategies in this guide, however, educators can at last effectively meet the needs of students with AS.
