This book explains the misuses and abuses of Null Hypothesis Significance Tests, which are reconsidered in light of Jeffreys’ Bayesian concept of the role of statistical inference, in experimental investigations. Minimizing the technical aspects, the studies focuses mainly on methodological contributions. The first part of the book gives an overview of the major approaches to statistical testing and an enlightening discussion of the philosophies of Fisher, Neyman-Pearson and Jeffrey. The conceptual and methodological implications of current practices of reporting effect sizes and confidence intervals are also examined and challenged. This sheds new light on the "significance testing controversy" and provides an appropriate Bayesian framework for a comprehensive approach to the analysis and interpretation of experimental data. There are references to clothing throughout Paul's letters, and the metaphor constitutes a significant aspect of his theology. The imagery appears several times in his letters: clothing with Christ (Gal 3:27; Rom 13:14), clothing with the new man (Col 3:9-10; Eph 4:22-24), and clothing with the resurrection body (1 Cor 15:49, 50-54; 2Cor 5:1-4). In order to understand the background to this use of the clothing metaphor, Jung Hoon Kim examines similar imagery in the Old Testament, 1 and 2 Enoch, the Apocalypse of Moses, Philo, rabbinic literature, Joseph and Aseneth, the Hymn of the Pearl, and Apuleius's Metamorphoses. He also discusses the Roman custom of clothing and the baptismal praxis of the ancient church. Kim concludes that Paul's metaphor suggests the life and glory of the image of God, which were lost by Adam, have been restored by baptism in Christ, and will go on to be consummated at the parousia.

One of the few areas of consensus in modern Deuteronomy scholarship is the contention that within the book of Deuteronomy there is a program of reform that was nothing short of revolutionary. Although there are divergent views regarding the specific details of this revolutionary program, most scholars agree that, in fundamental and profound ways, Deuteronomy was radical in its vision. This vision was expressed in key ideas: centralization of worship, secularization, and demythologization (of earlier traditions). However, Vogt argues that these ideas fail to account adequately for the data of the text of Deuteronomy itself. Instead, he claims, at the heart of Deuteronomic theology is the principle of the supremacy of Yahweh, which is to be acknowledged by all generations of Israelites through adherence to Torah. Thus, the book of Deuteronomy is in fact radical and countercultural but not in the ways that are usually adduced. It is radical in its rejection of ANE models of kingship and institutional permanence, in its emphasis on the holiness of life lived out before Yahweh, and in its elevation of Yahweh and his Torah. In the introductory chapter, the structure and ideology of the book are examined. Chapter 1 then examines some of the ways in which the theology of Deuteronomy has been understood, namely, in terms of centralization, secularization, and demythologization. Chapters 2–5 evaluate key texts that are used to support the idea that centralization, secularization, and demythologization are at the heart of the theology of Deuteronomy. An alternative reading of the texts is presented that highlights the supremacy of Yahweh and Torah. The final chapter investigates the theological and ideological implications of this alternative reading of key texts.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, a relatively clean burning fossil fuel, but also a renewable biofuel when biologically produced from waste treatment plants. Most (~70%) of the global methane emission comes from methanogenic archaea, namely methanogens that produce methane from simple substrates such as H2/CO2, formate, acetate, methanol, and other methylated compounds. Methanogens are found across all corners of the earth, including but not limited to wetlands, animals and humans, rice fields, landfills, sewage, ocean, termites, and hydrothermal vents. Their extensive adaptations to such a wide range of habitats predict a cross-boundary significance of methanogens in many areas such as the environment, energy, agriculture, biotechnology, and human and animal health. The goal of this Research Topic is to offer a forum that highlights the cross-boundary significance of methanogens by bringing together methanogen research from diverse settings to one place. This cross-boundary significance is currently underappreciated but imperative to collectively understanding and helping to solve some of the biggest and most urgent challenges humanity is facing such as global warming, food and energy insecurity, pollution, and disease. As a more potent and shorter-lived greenhouse gas than CO2, methane has moved to the center stage in our efforts in rapidly combating climate change. Presumably, methanogens and their associated microbes may have been forced into a positive feedback loop to fuel the sharp rise of methane in recent years. On the other hand, methanogens are considered keystone species in the ecosystem, which are vital to the stability of the natural biome therein. However, the roles of methanogens as keystone species across their habitats are underexplored. Moreover, the role of methanogens in human and animal intestinal microbiomes have been reconsidered with evidence for links to disease and impact on nutrition. Last but not the least, methanogens are emerging as a cell factory model for green manufacturing, because of their abilities to convert CO2 to valuable biochemicals. Further efforts in the bioengineering of methanogens have the potential to expand their commercial application from waste treatment to biomanufacturing. We welcome both basic and translational studies relevant to methanogens from any setting. Studies with a focus on methanogens are highly encouraged, and manuscripts having methanogens as a significant component are also welcome. All studies should emphasize and envisage their implications in understanding and/or solving one or more challenges humanity is facing. To encourage submissions from multiple disciplines, this Research Topic is cross-listed with a number of Frontiers journals and sections.
