La profession de chirurgien-dentiste nous place en contact direct des patients, sans orientation préalable requise lorsqu’il s’agit de la sphère oro-faciale. Ce fait nous place donc en première ligne pour rechercher des signes, des symptômes et ainsi participer au diagnostic de pathologies ayant des manifestations dans la sphère buccale. Certaines pathologies générales ont des manifestations qui apparaissent plus ou moins précocement dans notre zone de travail. Par conséquent, la découverte de toute lésion dans la sphère buccale peut engendrer la suspicion d’une pathologie sous-jacente avant même que tous les autres symptômes ne se soient exprimés. Ainsi, semble-t-il utile de répertorier les pathologies générales dont certaines manifestations sont dépistables par le chirurgien-dentiste. Le but de ce travail est la présentation des pathologies dont les signes bucco-dentaires discrets et précoces orientent le diagnostic et non un catalogue de toutes les lésions de la sphère orale. L’objectif premier étant de pouvoir repérer des signes d’une pathologie non diagnostiquée. L’organisation générale de la thèse consiste en l’étude tout d’abord des manifestations au niveau de la muqueuse buccale. Puis on s’intéressera à l’odonte, les glandes salivaires et le parodonte. On terminera enfin en évoquant quatre pathologies générales qui ont de nombreuses manifestations buccales et qu’il est important de dépister du fait de leur sévérité.

Le syndrome de Papillon-Lefèvre est une maladie rare, se déclarant généralement chez les jeunes patients. Il a été, pour la première fois, mis en évidence en 1924 par deux médecins Français chez une frère et une soeur. Une triade de symptômes caractérise ce syndrome qui sont : une kératose palmoplantaire, une parodontite sévère généralisée et des calcifications de la dure-mère, symptôme ajouté par Gorlin en 1964. Le caractère pluridisciplinaire du traitement de ce syndrome le rend complexe ainsi que l'absence de réponse aux traitements conventionnels de la parodontite. Après une présentation générale de ce syndrome, nous décrirons ses signes cliniques et leurs conséquences bucco-dentaires puis nous évoquerons les pistes thérapeutiques qui s'offrent au chirurgien-dentiste, grâce aux données actuelles de la littérature. The idea to publish a Handbook of Economic Psychology came up as a natural consequence of a discussion concerning appropriate reading material for courses in economic psychology. The discussion took place a few years ago in the Department of Economic Psychology at Tilburg University, The Netherlands. It was noted that there was a surprising lack of collections of pertinent readings, to say nothing about the lack of textbooks in the English language. So the present editors, who had been involved in the discussion, decided to start working on a Handbook. The situation has changed quite a lot since then. There are now a number of books, internationally available in the English language, in economic psy chology or behavioral economics. The interest in this field of study is expanding quite impressively. The Journal of Economic Psychology is now (1988) in its ninth volume and many other journals are publishing articles in the field. The application of psychological theories and methods to economic prob lems or the study of economic experiences and behavior is variously referred to as economic psychology or behavioral economics. While in principle we do not want to overdo the differences between the two, we have a feeling that economic psychology has a slightly stronger flavor of psychology than behavioral economics which in its turn seems to be closer to economics. Psychologists tend to feel more at home in economic psychology, while economists seem to favor behavioral economics.

It has long been clear that the way in which people interpret the world affects our emotional reactions. What has been less clear is exactly how such different interpretations lead to different emotions. This is the central question addressed by The Cognitive Structure of Emotions. Taking a cognitive science perspective, a systematic account is presented of the cognitive structures that underlie a wide range of different emotions. Detailed proposals about the factors that affect intensity are also offered. The authors propose three broad classes of emotions, each corresponding to a different attentional focus. One class consists of reactions to events, one of reactions to the actions of agents, and one of reactions to objects. By basing their analysis of the antecedents of emotions on an analysis of the perceived situational conditions that elicit them, the authors offer the prospect of accounting for variations in the emotions of different individuals, different cultures, and perhaps even different species.
