Book Description
This volume undertakes a detailed analysis of the latest generation of learners' dictionaries of English. It assembles the papers delivered at the eponymous symposium held at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in April 1997. There are a number of reasons why these dictionaries are of special lexicographic interest: 1. the type of learners' dictionary associated notably with the name of Hornby can look back on a long tradition in British lexicography; 2. competition between various publishers since the late 70s has given crucial impetus to the development of these dictionaries; 3. these new dictionaries are decisively marked by the evaluation of large-scale computer corpora. Central to the volume is the in-depth comparison of four dictionaries published in 1995: OALD5, LDOCE3, COBUILD2, CIDE. The aim is to exemplify specific differences of approach in the four dictionaries from a wide range of viewpoints (definitions, information on valency and collocations, policy on usage examples, political correctness, etc.). A number of articles also enlarge on the history of learners' dictionaries of English, the significance of corpus linguistics for lexicography, and perspectives for the future, notably in connection with the electronic media.

Pages : 256
Book Description
Fifth in the USA-Today bestselling Leigh Koslow Mystery Series! "The fifth installment in this excellent series, and perhaps Ms. Claire's best yet. The characters and relationships are superior, written with heartfelt compassion and wry wit."--Romantic Times Lilah Murchison never cared about anyone besides her prize-winning cats. Unfortunately, the feeling was mutual... When wealthy socialite Lilah Murchison dies in an airplane crash, the locals in Pittsburgh's North Boros shed no tears. The reclusive millionaire and rumored black widow was detested by almost everyone, including her own son, who expects to share his inheritance with the throng of Siamese that inhabit his mother's dreary mansion. But when Lilah's latest will delivers the bulk of her cash to another, unidentified heir, the cat litter flies. The only local who seems genuinely sorry about Ms. Lilah's passing is Leigh Koslow's veterinarian father, who hasn't a clue how the death of his long-term client could be connected to the bizarre series of break-ins and threats now plaguing his clinic. But daughter Leigh has a hunch that Lilah's mystery heir may be hiding right under their noses, and wishes she could prove it before the entire staff runs screaming out the door. Because someone wants the past to stay buried--even if it means adding a little extra to the grave. "Edie Claire always writes an entertaining amateur sleuth novel...NEVER TEASE A SIAMESE is her best work to date."--AllReaders.com "Fans will enjoy Claire's solid plot with its many twists and turns as well as the snappy dialogue of her well-rounded characters. This is a clever mystery written with a dash of humor and concluded quite logically. Altogether, a satisfying read."--ReviewingtheEvidence.com Originally published in mass market paperback by NAL/Penguin, Putnam, Inc. in 2002. Large-Print Edition published by Thorndike, 2003.

Judge Sir Gerald Fitzmaurice and the Discipline of International Law
Author: J. G. Merrills
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004635076
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 357
Book Description
Influential, but controversial - elected to the International Court in 1960, Sir Gerald Fitzmaurice served as a judge until 1973. This work comprises a thoughtful essay by Professor Merrills and a selection of Judge Fitzmaurice's opinions. Professor Merrills' essay analyses Judge Fitzmaurice's achievements during his judical tenure and relates them to his earlier work as a legal advisor and scholar. The essay also discusses the final phase of Fitzmaurice's career in which he served as a judge on the European Court of Human Rights and arbitrator. Demonstrating how Fitzmaurice's decisions as a judge stemmed from his distinctive view of law and the legal process, this study particularly interests scholars, practitioners, and students concerned with international adjudication and the nature of international law. This volume is the third in the series entitled The Judges, which examines the opinions of international judges who have made significant contributions to international law.

Milk It
Author: Jim DeRogatis
Publisher: Da Capo Press
ISBN: 9780306812712
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Taking its title with suitable slacker irony from a song on Nirvana's In Utero, Milk It! is an anthology of pieces written in the heat of the moment-an urgent and diverse overview that mirrors the chaotic rush of the postmodern sounds it covers. Headnotes and connective material-the "stories behind the stories"-provide running commentary on the music business, rock criticism, a troubled generation, and an attempt to put the fast-moving alternative-rock era in perspective from the safe distance of the comparatively bland new millennium. Compiled by a critic who shared the Generation X outlook, attitude, and biting sense of humor with the musicians that he covered-Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, and many others-Milk It! is the first serious attempt to chart the alternative music scene. Compelling, amusing, and provocative, Milk It! captures the excitement of an era, and reckons with its enduring influence.
