Book Description
Shortcuts Through Time is my second anthology of Twilight Zone genre science fiction stories. Operation Chronos is about a university physicist that befriends an elderly German janitor who had smuggled plans for a time machine out of Germany at the end of World War II. The professor is able to construct a time machine from the plans resulting in an alternate universe where professor and janitor reverse roles. A Change of Plans is based on the true life experience of the author’s mother that, had this event not happened, the author would most likely never have been born. A time warp enables a man to go back to the past and prevent his grandmother’s killing at the hands of his grandfather. But what will become of this man as a result of the change? (AUTHOR’S NOTE: The names, place, and dates have been altered or changed.) Winners and Losers recounts what happens to a community college instructor who can visualize tomorrow’s winning lottery numbers. The outcome is embedded in the title of the story. Back and Forth reveals the unintended consequences of an early 20th century time traveler’s attempt to alter the course of the later 20th century by arranging the deaths of Lenin and Hitler before they come to power. The Second Shooter tells about a man who is approached by a mysterious stranger with a plan to travel back in time to prevent the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963. The plan succeeds and the assassination is averted; however, it becomes necessary to go back in time once again – this time to ensure that Kennedy is assassinated in order to re-align two parallel universes. Hotel Retro is about a couple looking for a certain restaurant in Alton, Illinois and getting caught up in a heavy rainstorm as they are entering Alton. They take refuge at a hotel with a distinct mid-19th century motif. When the hotel catches fire they rescue the man in the adjoining room who bears an uncanny resemblance to Abraham Lincoln. When they leave the hotel they are in the 21st century. Did they somehow slip through a time warp? Maybe – but, then again, maybe not -- based on a phone call to the hotel after they return home. The Tiara is about a man who agrees to steal an ancient papal tiara originally from Persia and turn it over to Iranian agents. In doing so he gets trapped in an endless temporal paradox loop. The Promotion tells how George Armstrong Custer was mistakenly promoted to Brigadier-General. In the original reality he was promoted to the rank of Major but a college professor and his student have to create the mistake that will result in the creation of our universe which is parallel to the original universe. Operation Northern Lights is the tale of an expedition sent to the North Pole by the United States Government to determine if there is a Hollow Earth civilization as detailed in Admiral Byrd’s Secret Diary. The exact motivation for this government expedition and what happens to the crew on this mission is not quite clear. Are they what they seem to be or is it something else?

A Shortcut Through Time

A Shortcut Through Time PDF Author: George Johnson
Publisher: Vintage
ISBN: 0307424510
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
In this remarkably illustrative and thoroughly accessible look at one of the most intriguing frontiers in science and computers, award-winning New York Times writer George Johnson reveals the fascinating world of quantum computing—the holy grail of super computers where the computing power of single atoms is harnassed to create machines capable of almost unimaginable calculations in the blink of an eye. As computer chips continue to shrink in size, scientists anticipate the end of the road: A computer in which each switch is comprised of a single atom. Such a device would operate under a different set of physical laws: The laws of quantum mechanics. Johnson gently leads the curious outsider through the surprisingly simple ideas needed to understand this dream, discussing the current state of the revolution, and ultimately assessing the awesome power these machines could have to change our world.

There Are No Shortcuts

There Are No Shortcuts PDF Author: Rafe Esquith
Publisher: Anchor
ISBN: 0307491803
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
Year after year, Rafe Esquith’s fifth-grade students excel. They read passionately, far above their grade level; tackle algebra; and stage Shakespeare so professionally that they often wow the great Shakespearen actor himself, Sir Ian McKellen. Yet Esquith teaches at an L.A. innercity school known as the Jungle, where few of his students speak English at home, and many are from poor or troubled families. What’s his winning recipe? A diet of intensive learning mixed with a lot of kindness and fun. His kids attend class from 6:30 A.M. until well after 4:00 P.M., right through most of their vacations. They take field trips to Europe and Yosemite. They play rock and roll. Mediocrity has no place in their classroom. And the results follow them for life, as they go on to colleges such as Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford. Possessed by a fierce idealism, Esquith works even harder than his students. As an outspoken maverick of public education (his heroes include Huck Finn and Atticus Finch), he admits to significant mistakes and heated fights with administrators and colleagues. We all—teachers, parents, citizens—have much to learn from his candor and uncompromising vision.

Records Ruin the Landscape

Records Ruin the Landscape PDF Author: David Grubbs
Publisher: Duke University Press
ISBN: 0822377101
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 367

Book Description
John Cage's disdain for records was legendary. He repeatedly spoke of the ways in which recorded music was antithetical to his work. In Records Ruin the Landscape, David Grubbs argues that, following Cage, new genres in experimental and avant-garde music in the 1960s were particularly ill suited to be represented in the form of a recording. These activities include indeterminate music, long-duration minimalism, text scores, happenings, live electronic music, free jazz, and free improvisation. How could these proudly evanescent performance practices have been adequately represented on an LP? In their day, few of these works circulated in recorded form. By contrast, contemporary listeners can encounter this music not only through a flood of LP and CD releases of archival recordings but also in even greater volume through Internet file sharing and online resources. Present-day listeners are coming to know that era's experimental music through the recorded artifacts of composers and musicians who largely disavowed recordings. In Records Ruin the Landscape, Grubbs surveys a musical landscape marked by altered listening practices.

The Longest Shortcut

The Longest Shortcut PDF Author: Anil David
Publisher: Landmark Books Pte Ltd
ISBN: 981147673X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 15

Book Description
David was used to taking shortcuts. As a child he was a pathological liar. By the time he was 14, he had started to steal. At age 26, he was convicted of his first crime, taking clients’ funds, and sent to prison. After being released, he was convicted once again for criminal breach of trust and returned to serve his second sentence. Then in his late thirties, he stole close to $800,000 in a bank fraud, landing him in prison once again. There is another side of Anil’s story. He was sexually abused by an uncle when he was 8. He was initiated into sex by a tutor as a teenager. He grew up with an absent father and a mother that was too busy. His life and ambition were based solely on material things. How then did this convict become an icon of resilience at a National Day celebration? What happened to make him a prize-winning social entrepreneur worthy of investment? Why is he trusted to run a call centre in the men and women’s prisons? In The Longest Shortcut, Anil shares not just about this journey of redemption, but also the lessons he has learnt along the way about self-worth, parenting, leadership and hope. “Anil earned the trust of social impact investors and those around him to establish an organisation that has as its mission the giving of meaningful second chances.” — Desmond Lee, Minister for National Development & Minister-in-charge of Social Services Integration

Thinking Better

Thinking Better PDF Author: Marcus Du Sautoy
Publisher: Hachette UK
ISBN: 1541600371
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 330

Book Description
One of the world's great mathematicians shows why math is the ultimate timesaver—and how everyone can make their lives easier with a few simple shortcuts. We are often told that hard work is the key to success. But success isn’t about hard work – it’s about shortcuts. Shortcuts allow us to solve one problem quickly so that we can tackle an even bigger one. They make us capable of doing great things. And according to Marcus du Sautoy, math is the very art of the shortcut. Thinking Better is a celebration of how math lets us do more with less. Du Sautoy explores how diagramming revolutionized therapy, why calculus is the greatest shortcut ever invented, whether you must really practice for ten thousand hours to become a concert violinist, and why shortcuts give us an advantage over even the most powerful AI. Throughout, we meet artists, scientists, and entrepreneurs who use mathematical shortcuts to change the world. Delightful, illuminating, and above all practical, Thinking Better is for anyone who has wondered why you should waste time climbing the mountain when you could go around it much faster.
