We evaluated the effects of disturbance on stream benthic macroinvertebrates at the ecological scales of time, stream size, and burn extent in six segments of Cache Creek over the first 10 postfire years. Postfire changes in macroinvertebrate taxa richness, density, and dominant taxa in the burn streams were significantly different from those in the reference stream. Chironomidae and Baetis typically comprised 40?60% of the macroinvertebrate assemblages of burned streams but only 15?18% of the assemblage in the reference site. Coefficients of variation for the 10-year period indicated that richness, density, biomass, and Baetis abundance were more variable (1.2?3.5 times higher) in the burn streams than in the reference stream and that variability in Chironomidae abundance in burn sites increased with stream size. Fire effects were not attenuated progressively with increasing stream size, probably because the proportion of the catchment burned did not decrease. However, similar-sized streams in which 68?71% of their catchments burned were more severely disturbed than those in which only 39?47% burned. Long-term effects on the macroinvertebrate community were due largely to the loss of terrestrial vegetation and increased runoff, which caused severe alterations in stream channel conditions and large-scale bedload movement.

"The objective of this study was to describe and quantify the impact of the Midnite Mine on the benthic macroinvertebrate community of Blue Creek. Macroinvertebrate samples were collected upstream and downstream of the entry of the mine drainage throughout 1987. The sampling scheme was designed to identify the linear impact of the mine drainage by analyzing the invertebrate community in terms of density, diversity, similarity, presence- absence, and number of taxa. Seasonal and annual trends were determined by comparison of sample dates and by comparison of the previous investigations in the same system. The mine drainage reduced the macroinvertebrate density by 85 percent on a seasonal average immediately downstream of the mine drainage entry. The degree of impact was consistently high for all five sample dates and ranged from 76 percent to 94 percent. Recovery of macroinvertebrate density downstream was dependent on seasonal water discharge rates. Oyachen Creek, the downstream tributary, was dry for three of the sample dates negating the dilution effect reported in the previous study by Plotnikoff et al. (1988). Without this dilution, the downstream Blue Creek macroinvertebrate communities never recovered more than 39 percent from the initial density impact. There was a significant (0.05 level) difference in mean density for each downstream station when compared to upstream stations. The number of taxa was also reduced downstream of the mine drainage entry, but this was attributed to the overall density impact since diversity, similarity, and presence-absence showed only slight differences. There was a significant (0.05 level) difference in mean diversity in only one downstream station when compared to upstream stations. Comparison of the 1986 impact with1987 showed a similar level of initial impact. The amount of recovery differed and was attributed to the lower water discharge and subsequent extended drying of the downstream tributary in 1987. The Midnite Mine drainage with its increased conductivity, total hardness, sulfate, total solids, nitrate, and heavy metals have significantly reduced the macroinvertebrate densities of Blue Creek. Recovery from the drainage impact appears dependent on the overall water discharge level"--Document.

Abstract: The impacts of a 20,993 L diesel and gasoline spill on the benthic macroinvertebrate (BMI) and diatom communities in Cold Creek and the Santa Ana River (below its confluence with Cold Creek) were assessed by comparing species richness, diversity and compositions between fuel-impacted and reference sites. BMIs and diatoms were sampled four times (13- 6 months after the spill) in sites located upstream from the spill (reference) and in sites located 0.5, 1.3, 2.7 and 3.0 km downstream from the spill (impact). BMI communities up to 2.7 km below the spill and in Cold Creek had (1) lower species richness and diversity for at least 25 months after the spill and (2) dissimilar species compositions for up to 26 months after the spill when compared to the reference site. Diatom communities up to 2.7 km below the spill and in Cold Creek had (1) similar or higher species richness and diversity when compared to the reference site and (2) dissimilar species compositions when compared to the reference site for the entirety of the study. BMI and diatom communities located 3.0 km below the spill and in the Santa Ana River had similar species richness, diversity and compositions when compared to the reference site. These results provide evidence that the fuel spill had an impact on the BMI and diatom communities in Cold Creek and that these communities are still changing.
