Eucalypt stands in Brazil are, usually, highly productive and have been exploited at short rotations (u2264 7 years) as a result of the genotype selection for specific sites and the use of appropriate silvicultural techniques. The present study aimed at the selection of genotypes and spatial arrangements to obtain high productivity in plantations in the Brazilian southern region. Hybrid clones of Eucalyptus urophylla x E. grandis (A, B) and E. urophylla x E. globulus (C, D) were planted in the arrangements 3.75 x 2.40m; 6.0 x 1.5m and 4.0 x 3.0m. The stand variables were estimated by Gompertz model. The total height (Ht) and diameter (dbh) were measured annually up to 88 months. The Ht and dbh were the highest (pu22640.05) for clone B in the arrangement 4.00 x 3.00m. The reduction of the distance between trees in the planting line (6.00 x 1.50m), leading to increasing rectangularity, resulted in smaller dbh in relation to the 3.75 x 2.40m, both with 9 m2 per plant and, the individual volume was the largest in the 4.0 x 3.0m, for all clones. Clone B showed the highest yield in the arrangement 3.75 x 2.40m and, presented the largest annual mean increase at tree harvesting age. The regulatory rotation at 5, 6 and 7 years should be adopted. The results allow inferring that the tree planting arrangements with greater rectangularity should be avoided because they result in lower productivity and diameter growth. Wider spacings are more adequate to produce logs of larger diameter.

Plantation forests often have a negative image. They are typically assumed to be poor substitutes for natural forests, particularly in terms of biodiversity conservation, carbon storage, provision of clean drinking water and other non-timber goods and services. Often they are monocultures that do not appear to invite people for recreation and other direct uses. Yet as this book clearly shows, they can play a vital role in the provision of ecosystem services, when compared to agriculture and other forms of land use or when natural forests have been degraded. This is the first book to examine explicitly the non-timber goods and services provided by plantation forests, including soil, water and biodiversity conservation, as well as carbon sequestration and the provision of local livelihoods. The authors show that, if we require a higher provision of ecosystem goods and services from both temperate and tropical plantations, new approaches to their management are required. These include policies, methods for valuing the services, the practices of small landholders, landscape approaches to optimise delivery of goods and services, and technical issues about how to achieve suitable solutions at the scale of forest stands. While providing original theoretical insights, the book also gives guidance for plantation managers, policy-makers, conservation practitioners and community advocates, who seek to promote or strengthen the multiple-use of forest plantations for improved benefits for society. How global forest management shifted from an integrated conservation model to a bifurcated system of timber plantations and protected areas. Today, the world's forests are threatened by global warming, growing demand for wood products, and increasing pressure to clear tropical forests for agricultural use. Economic globalization has enabled Western corporations to export timber processing jobs and import cheap wood products from developing countries. Timber plantations of exotic, fast-growing species supply an ever-larger amount of the world's wood. In response, many countries have established forest areas protected from development. In this book, Brett Bennett views today's forestry issues from a historical perspective. The separation of wood production from the protection of forests, he shows, stems from entangled environmental, social, political, and economic factors. This divergence—driven by the concomitant intensification of production and creation of vast protected areas—is reshaping forest management systems both public and private. Bennett shows that plantations and protected areas evolved from, and then undermined, an earlier integrated forest management system that sought both to produce timber and to conserve the environment. He describes the development of the science and profession of forestry in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe; discusses the twentieth-century creation of timber plantations in the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Australia; and examines the controversies over deforestation that led to the establishment of protected areas.
