Book Description
The laser Raman scattering technique shows potential as a diagnostic method for determining the chemical and thermodynamic state of high-temperature gases. To investigate the utility of this technique for shock-tube diagnostics, and to validate the method at known elevated temperatures, vibrational Raman intensities were measured behind an incident shock wave. Intensity history data through the wave front, vibrational excitation times of oxygen in air, along with temperature and density measurements for oxygen and nitrogen in air were obtained over a range of postshock conditions. The measured densities and temperatures were found to be in good agreement with shock-wave theory. An excitation time measurement also agreed well with shock-tube data obtained with other diagnostic methods. In general, the results indicated that the Raman scattering technique was accurate at elevated temperatures and should prove useful in determining the thermochemical state of gases in continuous flows as well as in shock tubes and other impulse facilities.

Use of Time Resolved Raman Scattering for the Measurement of Dissociation Rates in a Shock Tube

Use of Time Resolved Raman Scattering for the Measurement of Dissociation Rates in a Shock Tube PDF Author: Robert W. Milling
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Raman spectroscopy
Languages : en
Pages : 34

Book Description
The use of Raman scattering as a diagnostic tool for measuring gaseous relaxation rates in a shock tube is investigated. The theory of Raman scattering is reviewed and the application to shock tube measurements is developed. Results of an experiment are discussed. While a Raman signal was detected it is concluded that additional development is required before this technique may by applied successfully. (Author).

Shock Tubes PDF Author: Irving Israel Glass
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1487597584
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 852

Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of a symposium held at the University of Toronto in June 1969. The symposium consisted of six sessions; each containing an invited paper, followed by six contributed papers reporting on recent, relevant research and development. The topics are: a review of research problems in basic shock tube flows and the possibilities for the shock tube in the future; driving techniques; explosive drivers; theoretical and experimental research in electromagnetic shock tubes; chemical kinetics and spectroscopy; and a review of shock tube diagnostics, instrumentation and fundamental data as well as the measurement of physical quantities.

Book Description
Examining the use of Raman scattering as a gaseous systems probe, this volume emphasizes the application of laser Raman gas diagnostics to fluid mechanics and combustion measurements. Topics ranging from the basic physics and chemistry involved in scattering measurements to present and potential applications in flame systems, industrial process control, and the atmosphere are discussed. This book investigates important fluid mechanics problems for which Raman scattering can contribute new information and surveys efforts in the development of diagnostic capabilities designed to correspond to the needs of fluid mechanics. In addition, this work reports on significant nonthermal and nonchemical equilibrium problems and explores types of laser sources, spectral discrimination systems, and signal processing.
