Shingu PDF Author: Arne Kalland
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136916962
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 315

Book Description
From being an important centre which attracted a large number of merchants during the feudal period, Shingū, on the northern shores of Kyushu is today a suburb of Fukuoka City. Fishing is a slowly-dying occupation and this volume analyses how the fishermen adjust to changing circumstances. Although Japan is the largest fishing nation in the world, when originally published this book was the first to be published in English which focussed on the composition and role performance of the crews and larger net-groups. This analysis has been set in an historical perspective, showing how the vertical structures during the Tokugawa period have changed to more egalitarian structures where much energy is spent to hinder the development of any new hierarchy.

Japan's Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage

Japan's Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage PDF Author: Kat Davis
Publisher: Cicerone Press Limited
ISBN: 178765088X
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 269

Book Description
A guidebook to walking Japan’s UNESCO-listed Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails, covering the Nakahechi, Choishimichi/Koyasan and Kohechi routes, as well as a Hongu loop, highlights of the Iseji route and shorter walks around Kumano Sanzan shrines. Since many of the trails involve steep ascents and descents, a moderate level of fitness is required. Routes vary from 5 to 64km (3–40 miles) and crisscross the mountainous Kii Peninsula, south of Osaka. Some can be enjoyed in a single day or half-day, whereas the Nakahechi and Kohechi routes lend themselves to a 4-day mini-trek. Spring and late autumn are best for the trails, although the Nakahechi can be walked year-round. 1:50,000 mapping plus larger-scale maps for key towns and the main shrines Detailed information on public transport, accommodation and refreshments Advice on planning and preparation Fascinating insights into Japanese culture and spirituality GPX files available to download
