The Dark Side of Statius' Achilleid

The Dark Side of Statius' Achilleid PDF Author: Julene Abad Del Vecchio
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198895224
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 277

Book Description
The Dark Side of Statius' Achilleid explores systematically and for the first time the darker aspects of Statius' Achilleid, bringing to light the poem's tragic and epic dimensions. By seeking to position at centre-stage these darker elements, the book offers several new readings of the Achilleid in relation to its literary inheritance, its gender dynamics, and its generic tensions. This volume delves beneath the surface of a story that ostensibly deals with a light subject matter—the cross-dressing of a young Achilles on Scyros—to offer an in-depth examination of the poem's relationship to its epic and tragic precursors, and to explore its more serious themes. It is shown to challenge traditional epic narratives, examine Achilles' complex familial relationships and his deviant and transgressive heroism, highlight the tragic character of Thetis, and provide glimpses of the horrors that the cataclysmic Trojan War will beget. By looking into Statius' wide-ranging dialogue with his literary predecessors, such as Homer, Sophocles, Virgil, Ovid, Lucan, and Seneca, as well as Statius' previous epic magnum opus, the Thebaid, the multidimensional characterisations of Achilles and other of the poem's key characters, such as Ulysses, Calchas, and Thetis are investigated. Far from simply representing a shameful but essentially humorous cross-dressing episode in Achilles' life that is destined to be forgotten, the Achilleid can be seen to challenge the very fabric of epic by probing the validity and authority of its literary tradition, as well as highlighting its highly innovative and experimental nature.

Take a Closer Look

Take a Closer Look PDF Author: Daniel Arasse
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400848040
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 177

Book Description
What paintings can teach us—if we can really learn to see them What happens when we look at a painting? What do we think about? What do we imagine? How can we explain, even to ourselves, what we see or think we see? And how can art historians interpret with any seriousness what they observe? In six engaging, short narrative "fictions," each richly illustrated in color, Daniel Arasse, one of the most brilliant art historians of our time, cleverly and gracefully guides readers through a variety of adventures in seeing, from Velázquez to Titian, Bruegel to Tintoretto. By demonstrating that we don't really see what these paintings are trying to show us, Arasse makes it clear that we need to take a closer look. In chapters that each have a different form, including a letter, an interview, and an animated conversation with a colleague, the book explores how these pictures teach us about ways of seeing across the centuries. In the process, Arasse freshly lays bare the dazzling power of painting. Fast-paced and full of humor as well as insight, this is a book for anyone who cares about really looking at, seeing, and understanding paintings.

Vision, Reflection, and Desire in Western Painting

Vision, Reflection, and Desire in Western Painting PDF Author: David Summers
Publisher: UNC Press Books
ISBN: 1469626047
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
Spanning more than 2,500 years in the history of art, Vision, Reflection, and Desire in Western Painting demonstrates how the rise and diffusion of the science of optics in ancient Greece and the Mediterranean world correlated to pictorial illusion in the development of Western painting from Hellenistic Greece to the present. Using examples from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, David Summers argues that scene-painting (architectural backdrops) and shadow-painting (in which forms are modeled or shown as if in relation to a source of light) not only evolved in close association with geometric optics toward the end of the fifth century B.C.E., but also contributed substantially to the foundations of the new science. The spread of understanding of how light is transmitted, reflected, and refracted is evident in the works of artists such as Brunelleschi, van Eyck, Alberti, and Leonardo. The interplay between optics and painting that influenced the course of Western art, Summers says, persisted as a framework for the realism of Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Goya and continues today in modern photography and film.

ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY, A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO

ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY, A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO PDF Author: CHETAN KATHALAY
Publisher: CHETAN KATHALAY
ISBN: 9351749371
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 87

Book Description
This book explains practical aspects of Electromagnetic Compatibility testing and design without resorting to lengthy mathematical derivations. After reading the book, the designer can immediately incorporate measures like PCB design, filtering, shielding, grounding, cable routing at the design stage of the product development cycle, without worrying too much about theory. This will save both his money and efforts that would be otherwise be required if he tries to modify a frozen design.

For the sake of convenience, the book has been divided into two parts. Part I has six chapters dealing with EMC fundamentals, EMC standards and EMC test methodologies. Part II of the book has five chapters dedicated to EMC design methodologies namely filtering, shielding, PCB design, grounding & bonding and cable routing..

And last but not the least, the book ends with an introduction to CE marking - a mandatory compliance mark placed on products intended for export to the European Union.

The Full-Length Mirror

The Full-Length Mirror PDF Author: Wu Hung
Publisher: Reaktion Books
ISBN: 1789146119
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
Beautifully illustrated, a stirring and wide-ranging reflection on art, technology, culture—and the full-length mirror. This book tells two stories about the full-length mirror. One story, through time and space, crisscrosses the globe to introduce a broad range of historical actors: kings and slaves, artists and writers, merchants and craftsmen, courtesans, and commoners. The other story explores the connections among objects, painting, and photography, the full-length mirror providing a new perspective on historical artifacts and their images in art and visual culture. The Full-Length Mirror represents a new kind of global art history in which “global” is understood in terms of both geography and visual medium, a history encompassing Europe, Asia, and North America, and spanning over two millennia from the fourth century BCE to the early twentieth century.
