The story begins in 1881, when Dr. Watson, having returned to London from Afghanistan, meets Holmes in a laboratory. Holmes shakes Watson's hand and comments, "You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive?" Watson is astounded by Holmes' ability to notice details and assemble them.
