Shelter, Settlement & Development

Shelter, Settlement & Development PDF Author: Lloyd Rodwin
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000562379
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 329

Book Description
First published in 1987, Shelter, Settlement & Development presents a comprehensive and authoritative reappraisal of shelter, settlement and development policies and programs in third world countries. Drawing on the considerable research and advisory experience of an internationally distinguished group of contributors, it introduces new ideas on many themes such as spatial strategies, land policy, shanty town settlements, infrastructure standards and construction obstacles, intricacies of housing finance and household behaviour and preferences. Each facet of the study sums up what can be inferred from past experience: what worked and what did not, and why; what ideas are in currency; what policy choices lie ahead; and most important of all, what further changes are needed to achieve feasible and effective solutions, not quick fixes, or one-shot remedies. There is a special focus on the necessary learning processes so that whatever action is taken is likely to be self-correcting in the light of subsequent experience, reflection and changing circumstances. This book is an essential read for scholars and researchers of development studies, urban studies and planning, and public policy.

National Experiences with Shelter Delivery for the Poorest Groups

National Experiences with Shelter Delivery for the Poorest Groups PDF Author:
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789211312317
Category : Housing policy
Languages : en
Pages : 122

Book Description
"National Experiences with Shelter Delivery for the Poorest Groups (1994) deals with the problems encountered by the poor in their struggle to find shelter. Based on examples from India, Indonesia and Mexico (and to some extent Nigeria) this report by the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements focuses on how current shelter policies are leaving the urban poor out of the shelter delivery process, and provides descriptions of successful projects of shelter improvement. The report found that the implementation of the shelter policies in the case studies has not been a total success. Legal restrictions and building regulations have, for instance, not been reformed to any substantial degree, and the availability of affordable and relevant building materials for the poor has not been significantly improved. This report will be of interest to those planners and policy makers hoping to learn from case study initiatives in housing the urban poor."--UN-HABITAT.

Living on the Margins: Social Access to Shelter in Urban South Asia

Living on the Margins: Social Access to Shelter in Urban South Asia PDF Author: Navtej K. Purewal
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040281117
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 199

Book Description
This title was first published in 2000. The privatization of former social state housing through recent public-private partnerships is becoming increasingly prevalent in Third World as well as in Western countries. In most Third World countries, this shift has had profound effects upon the patterns of access of shelter. Drawing on studies of South Asian and other Third World contexts, as well as original in-depth empirical research from Amritsar, a city in North-West India, this book offers an analysis of the withdrawal of state housing provision. It develops and applies a unique model based on social status to analyze the new routes of access to housing and land by the urban poor. Its conclusions argue that these new privatization policies largely rely upon already existing informal and self-help settlements which continue to attract the poor and to be the largest housing providers in many cities, thus providing a ready-made safety net for such policies. The inter-linkages between the private state and the public market make up a highly diversified and complex picture of shelter arrangements being accessed by the poor which is reflected in the social differentiation and increasingly stratified housing market. The book argues that these partnership policies therefore have long-term implications upon social patterns of inclusion and exclusion which must be addressed.
