Book Description
As you can see, my dear reader, what is contained in this book is Arabic poetry of my own writing written in two languages, in its original form of Arabic fonts that I translated into English to commemorate, reiterate, show and present to the reader the degree of appreciation, respect, admiration and love that the Arabs had and will always carry in their hearts and memory for the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father and President of the United Arab Emirates. As a matter of fact, it is rather, an invitation to all Arabs to preserve this respect and love for a unique personality and head of state who was a visionary and was distinguished by piety, sincerity, honesty, wisdom, vision and insight, and a model in good deeds and in his works towards his local big family of the UAE and his nation, being a scrupulous persistent founder and president of the United Arab Emirates, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul in peace, who was unmatched among all the heads of other Arab states who preceded him, his contemporaries, and those who followed him, as they all cared about themselves and ignored the needs of their people. The personality of Sheikh Zayed, with its authenticity and Bedouin kindness and genuineness, dominated all the Arab heads' personalities that proved that they were neither national servants nor national heads, insofar as they were seeking their own interests of monopolizing power, enabling them to exploit the country and its wealth for the sake of their survival only and not for the elevation and development of their people, in contrast to Zayed's morals and principles. . Hence, I wrote about this gentleman what I saw befitting his stature and person as much as I could and with the modest literary language I had and was able to resort to in my poetry about this leader.Although I am not a student of the literary department in the Arabic language, I love writing poetry and I depend on what I have from the simple linguistic wealth that the Holy Qur'an enriches, which is the embodiment and source of the Arabic language, thanks also to our professors who instilled in us the love of poetry and the a love of music and rhythm in Poetry and the development of the musical poetic quality. Therefore, you find me moving away from modern poetry and sticking to musical poetry that adheres to the fields of classical rhythmic tunes of poetry.

From Sheikhs to Sultanism

From Sheikhs to Sultanism PDF Author: Christopher M. Davidson
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0197650317
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 451

Book Description
Muhammad bin Salman Al-Saud and Muhammad bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the respective princely strongmen of Saudi Arabia and the UAE, have torn up the old rules. They have spurred game-changing economic master plans, presided over vast anti-corruption crackdowns, tackled entrenched religious forces, and overseen the mass arrest of critics. In parallel, they also appear to have replaced the old 'sheikhly' consensus systems of their predecessors with something more autocratic, more personalistic, and perhaps even analytically distinct. These are the two wealthiest and most populous Gulf monarchies, and increasingly important global powers--Saudi Arabia is a G20 member, and the UAE will be the host of the World Expo in 2021-2022. Such sweeping changes to their statecraft and authority structures could well end up having a direct impact, for better or worse, on policies, economies and individual lives all around the world. Christopher M. Davidson tests the hypothesis that Saudi Arabia and the UAE are now effectively contemporary or even 'advanced' sultanates, and situates these influential states within an international model of autocratic authoritarianism. Drawing on a range of primary sources, including new interviews and surveys, From Sheikhs to Sultanism puts forward an original, empirically grounded interpretation of the rise of both MBS and MBZ.

Places of Mind

Places of Mind PDF Author: Timothy Brennan
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux
ISBN: 0374714711
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 464

Book Description
A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice The first comprehensive biography of the most influential, controversial, and celebrated Palestinian intellectual of the twentieth century As someone who studied under Edward Said and remained a friend until his death in 2003, Timothy Brennan had unprecedented access to his thesis adviser’s ideas and legacy. In this authoritative work, Said, the pioneer of postcolonial studies, a tireless champion for his native Palestine, and an erudite literary critic, emerges as a self-doubting, tender, eloquent advocate of literature’s dramatic effects on politics and civic life. Charting the intertwined routes of Said’s intellectual development, Places of Mind reveals him as a study in opposites: a cajoler and strategist, a New York intellectual with a foot in Beirut, an orchestra impresario in Weimar and Ramallah, a raconteur on national television, a Palestinian negotiator at the State Department, and an actor in films in which he played himself. Brennan traces the Arab influences on Said’s thinking along with his tutelage under Lebanese statesmen, off-beat modernist auteurs, and New York literati, as Said grew into a scholar whose influential writings changed the face of university life forever. With both intimidating brilliance and charm, Said melded these resources into a groundbreaking and influential countertradition of radical humanism, set against the backdrop of techno-scientific dominance and religious war. With unparalleled clarity, Said gave the humanities a new authority in the age of Reaganism, one that continues today. Drawing on the testimonies of family, friends, students, and antagonists alike, and aided by FBI files, unpublished writings, and Said's drafts of novels and personal letters, Places of Mind synthesizes Said’s intellectual breadth and influence into an unprecedented, intimate, and compelling portrait of one of the great minds of the twentieth century.

Hollow Land

Hollow Land PDF Author: Eyal Weizman
Publisher: Verso Books
ISBN: 1804297100
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 369

Book Description
Hollow Land is a groundbreaking exploration of the political space created by Israel’s colonial occupation. In this journey from the deep subterranean spaces of the West Bank and Gaza to their militarized airspace, Eyal Weizman unravels Israel’s mechanisms of control and its transformation of the Occupied Territories into a theoretically constructed artifice, in which all natural and built features function as the weapons and ammunition with which the conflict is waged. Weizman traces the development of these ideas, from the influence of archaeology on urban planning, Ariel Sharon’s reconceptualization of military defense during the 1973 war, through the planning and architecture of the settlements, to contemporary Israeli discourse and practice of urban warfare and airborne targeted assassinations. In exploring Israel’s methods to transform the landscape and the built environment themselves into tools of domination and control, Hollow Land lays bare the political system at the heart of this complex and terrifying project of late-modern colonial occupation.
