Book Description
Today, if you ask Mexican-America elders in Central Texas if they have heard about Gabino Rodriguez, they might give you a blank look. But inquire about the Maracas Kid and they will tell you lively stories about a dancing man and his maracas! The Maracas Kid, as he was affectionately called, was a local performer who played with dozens of bands, but who never had a true band of his own. In this biography, readers - especially young adults - will learn about the life of a captivating musician who lived out his artistic dream almost every weekend of his adult live. Discover how Gabino came to be the Maracas Kid as you read colorful descriptions of him as told by the voices of people who knew him best - relatives, friends and band members, as well as bar and night club owners. Readers will also gain insight into the Mexican-American history of Waco, Texas. Tidbits about local heritage, people, places, and cultural facts support each chapter, offering the reader a glimpse of what it was like back in the 'good old days' in Central Texas-during the life and times of the Maracas Kid. Gabino Rodriguez performed his way into the nightlife scene in Central Texas for multiple decades and earned himself the nickname "Maracas Kid." Find out why he was also called "the Michael Jackson of his time" and get a unique glimpse of the local Mexican-American history and culture during his lifetime.

Mexican Cinema

Mexican Cinema PDF Author: Carl J. Mora
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 9780520043046
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 284

Book Description
The author's main reason for writing this book, however, is simply to provide an introduction to the Mexican commercial cinema for American and other English-speaking readers. Although the United States has been, and continues to be, a major foreign market for Mexican movies, the overwhelming majority of Americans are unaware of them. Mexican films are restricted to the Hispanic theater circuits and shown without English subtitles; therefore anyone wishing to see a Mexican movie would have to be fairly fluent in Spanish. Such a requisite effectively eliminates almost the entire general audience in the United States from exposure to Mexican cinema.

A Nation for All

A Nation for All PDF Author: Alejandro de la Fuente
Publisher: Univ of North Carolina Press
ISBN: 0807898767
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 466

Book Description
After thirty years of anticolonial struggle against Spain and four years of military occupation by the United States, Cuba formally became an independent republic in 1902. The nationalist coalition that fought for Cuba's freedom, a movement in which blacks and mulattoes were well represented, had envisioned an egalitarian and inclusive country--a nation for all, as Jose Marti described it. But did the Cuban republic, and later the Cuban revolution, live up to these expectations? Tracing the formation and reformulation of nationalist ideologies, government policies, and different forms of social and political mobilization in republican and postrevolutionary Cuba, Alejandro de la Fuente explores the opportunities and limitations that Afro-Cubans experienced in such areas as job access, education, and political representation. Challenging assumptions of both underlying racism and racial democracy, he contends that racism and antiracism coexisted within Cuban nationalism and, in turn, Cuban society. This coexistence has persisted to this day, despite significant efforts by the revolutionary government to improve the lot of the poor and build a nation that was truly for all.

Castro, the Blacks, and Africa

Castro, the Blacks, and Africa PDF Author: Carlos Moore
Publisher: University of California Press
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 504

Book Description
From the headline-grabbing stay in Harlem to his first diplomatic trip to Africa, Fidel Castro has made race a key to his foreign policy. Stressing the bonds that link Blacks in the United States and Africa with the more than half of Cuba's population, Castro has used race to embarrass his chief enemy and to cement allies not only with Africa but with the entire Third World. He has turned those alliances into so many bargaining chips to gain power within the Communist bloc. This is not simply a scholarly book; it is a moving book. No one has so capably unveiled the central tragedy of Cuban history, a denial of racism that guarantees it survival. The double drama of Cuba's own history and its foreign policy is a drama painfully, articulately and powerfully presented by Carlos Moore.
