Maple Shade

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing

Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
Maple Shade's history spans more than three centuries, starting when John and Sarah Roberts arrived from Burlington, New Jersey, in 1682. The settlement became more permanent in 1794 when Main Street was constructed, allowing a connection to the King's Highway and to the Cooper River ferry. In 1811, property was set aside for the Chesterford School, also known as the "Little Red Schoolhouse." In 1867, the township gained an identity with a train station and a rail stop. Formerly known as Chester Township, the town was now called Maple Shade. Along with the railroad came various industries and businesses, several shops, a post office, and an active brick-making business. Maple Shade gradually changed from a rural community to a suburban town. Today many of these early settlers are still known through street names: Robert Stiles, Samuel Coles, Alexander Mecray, and the Rudderows were all early settlers of Maple Shade.

Book Description
David Swan (+Biography and Bibliography) (Matte Cover Finish): We can be but partially acquainted even with the events which actually influence our course through life, and our final destiny. There are innumerable other events if such they may be called which come close upon us, yet pass away without actual results, or even betraying their near approach, by the reflection of any light or shadow across our minds. Could we know all the vicissitudes of our fortunes, life would be too full of hope and fear, exultation or disappointment, to afford us a single hour of true serenity. This idea may be illustrated by a page from the secret history of David Swan.

Trees: For Shelter and Shade, For Memory and Magic

Trees: For Shelter and Shade, For Memory and Magic PDF Author: Charles Fenyvesi
Publisher: Plunkett Lake Press
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 115

Book Description
Linking practical neighborly advice to the many cults of tree worship across the globe, Charles Fenyvesi offers an inspiring overview of planting, pruning, and enjoying trees. He pays homage to the immortalized oak and birch as well the controversial qualities of the paulownia (also known as Princess Tree), named after Czar Paul’s daughter, and the catalpa, planted by Frederick the Great in his Potsdam estate and favored by President Thomas Jefferson. For property owners who cry out for the drama of a solitary, singularly expressive specimen or have room for but one tree, this book lists categories such as elegance or informality, longevity or low maintenance, shape or color, character or foliage. “This book entertains, while teaching each of us how we can better connect with trees, using mind, hands and hearts.” — R. Neil Sampson, Executive Vice President,American Forestry Association “Will make all of us take a new look at the stories and pleasures of trees in our lives and landscapes... presented in a series of vignettes that compel you to read, use and plant trees.” — H. Marc Cathey, National Chair, Florist and Nursery Crops Review, US Department of Agriculture “Columnist Charles Fenyvesi... makes trees seem as familiar as the families who live on the block... He gives very good advice, and along the way he makes the trees memorable as he discusses them with evident pleasure and knowledge.” — Virginia Greiner, garden columnist, Washington Times
