Freud's elaborations of the First Drive Theory. Theoretic development and implications of a sexual drive for aetiology

Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Psychology - Social Psychology, grade: 1,0, International Psychoanalytic University, language: English, abstract: In this essay the author wants to outline several aspects of Freud's first drive theory, to show his theoretic development and light up the implications of the assumption of a sexual drive for aetiology of neuroses and culture. Therefore he will focus on Freud's Interpretation of Dreams (1900a) and his Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (1905d). Furthermore he wants to address the difference between Freud's elaborations and the understanding of psychoanalysis today, using ideas of Müller-Pozzi (2008) for an example. Unsolved problems of psychopathology led Freud to a theoretic elaboration about the foundations of human psyche. As neuropathologist he held on a biologic concept on addressing the human psyche before 1900. In the new century he was a pioneer of a genetic psychology. According to Sulloway, "Freud established perhaps the most comprehensive evolutionary explanation of the origins of human behaviour that has yet been formulated in science". During the phase from 1892 to 1895 Freud established an aetiology of neurasthenia and anxiety neurosis, that is specifically sexual. His ideas of sexuality in this time are close to the scientific mainstream of late nineteenth century. Since neurasthenia was a well-known syndrome, sexuality was seen as one aetiological factor. But Freud supposed sexuality as the only reason for neurasthenia. The aetiological view that sexuality, and later on the sexual drive, plays the major role in aetiology of neurosis is a posit that Freud held on in his complete works. He justified this with his clinical experience, though he always noticed other influences, especially hereditary.

Pages : 228

Book Description
Freud's discovery of the preeminent role of sex in creating neuroses resulted in theories that changed the thinking of the world. He was a champion of greater sexual understanding in a society that only whispered the words he used out loud. This pioneering study of the nature of sexuality and love remains a monumental achievement. The importance of sexuality and infantilism in shaping individual destiny sets the general theme for these groundbreaking studies. Elaborating his now-famous frustration theory, Freud dramatically illustrates how a person's sexuality can be stifled to the point of neurosis by a sex-scared society. With utter frankness, he explains various aspects of homosexuality, incest, frigidity, impotence, masochism, sadism, and fetishism. Here is Freud at his most brilliant, raising the curtain on a new era of sexual and social awareness -- Publisher description.

The Ego and the Id

The Ego and the Id PDF Author: Sigmund Freud

Book Description
“Many major ideas have been borne out [of his theories] and are still relevant today.” —Huffington Post One of famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud’s most prominent ideas was that of the id, the ego, and the super-ego—the three main factors behind the workings of the human mind. Freud claimed these components of the human psyche controlled all processes of personality, behaviors, and traits in a person. The Id was a person’s most basic and impulsive instincts—the ones that feed into our deepest desires and physical needs. The Super-Ego was the opposite of the id. This component controlled our highest morals and standards, operating through our conscience and making us desire to be our most ideal-selves. The piece in the middle is the Ego. The ego mediates between the id and realities of the world around us, while being supervised (and guilted) by the super-ego. In this new edition of his book, The Ego and the Id, Sigmund Freud delves deeper into the concepts of the human mind and the results of the conflicts and workings between them.
