Sewer System Planning Using Household Willingness to Pay Data

Sewer System Planning Using Household Willingness to Pay Data PDF Author: Venkateswarlu Swarna

Category : Sanitation, Household
Languages : en
Pages : 238

Book Description
"The planning problem of this research deals with using household willingness to pay information to improve sewer system planning in less developed countries, particularly in selecting the regions to be served by sewers and in transporting the wastewater from these regions to a treatment plant through an optimal network of trunk sewers. To address the planning problem, this report has developed three planning models of varying mathematical complexity and has demonstrated their application for a hypothetical city. The first model, the least complex of the three, approaches the planning problem by assuming that trunk sewer costs can be ignored, and it solves the model with simple arithmetic calculations. This model is best for cities in which trunk sewer costs are negligible or are covered by subsidies. The second model considers trunk sewer costs and assumes trunk sewer routing. It uses linear programming to determine the optimal solution even though the model involves binary variables. This model is applicable where trunk sewer routing choices can be made based on engineering judgment. The final model, the most complex of the three, considers trunk sewer costs and it determines optimal trunk sewer routing. This model uses mixed integer programming for solution; it is most appropriate for regions in a city that are flat and distant from treatment plants, conditions which essentially do not present an obvious engineering basis for deciding trunk sewer routing."--leaf [i]

Integrated Drainage Systems Planning and Design for Municipal Engineers

Integrated Drainage Systems Planning and Design for Municipal Engineers PDF Author: Patrick Ssempeera
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000869768
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 499

Book Description
Urban water management has to take an integrated approach that prioritizes sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) over gray infrastructure. This book elaborates on the planning and evaluation of pipework drainage systems with a focus on modern-day constraints to deliver a solution that favors sustainability as the overarching goal. The book includes a technical section on design of gray and green infrastructure, considering the total lifecycle costs of drainage systems. Advanced computer simulation techniques are discussed after covering the derivation of both standard and empirical equations for appropriate hydrology and hydraulics. The book provides an incorporation of reliability analyses for both green and gray infrastructure starting with techniques for forecasting flows, hydraulic performance, and lifecycle costs. The work also involves 3-D modeling, geospatial and big data analysis, and how these techniques are applied into city management—particularly beneficial to municipal engineers who are increasingly becoming involved in mapping the underground. Soil mechanics and subsurface drainage systems are analyzed and structural aspects of sewers are included. Finally, soil behavior in shear, retaining wall structures, and tunneling is briefly featured in the book. This book will be of interest to (under)graduate and postgraduate engineering students, drainage engineers, urban planners, architects, water engineers, developers, construction contractors, and municipal engineers.
